Docket No. 50-482 Mr. Bart D. Withers President and Chief Executive Officer Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation Post Office Box 411.

Burlington, Kansas 66839

Dear Mr. Withers:

SUBJECT:

WOLF CREEK GENERATING STATION: RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 92-08,

" THERM 0-LAG 330-1 FIRE BARRIERS" (TAC NO. M85625)

By letter dated May 24, 1993, the NRC staff requested that Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation provide a description of the process and schedule related to the determination of operability of fire barrier configurations installed at the Wolf Creek Generating Station and that are not compassed by the Nuclear Management _and Resources Council (NUMARC) Thermo-Lag program.

It has since come to the staff's attention that the NUMARC program remains in the developmental stage, and therefore licensees are unable to determine which configurations may or may not be bounded by the generic studies.

Please disregard the portion of the May 24, 1993 letter that requested you to address your plans related to the-unique fire barrier configurations within 30 days of receipt of that letter.

Please include the discussion of your approach and schedule for these configurations, as well as the configurations bounded by the NUMARC program, within 30 days of the completion of the NUMARC program.

The NRC regrets any confusion or inconvenience which may have resulted from the request included in the May 24, 1993 letter.

Please have your staff contact me if any additional clarification of our request is needed.

Sincerely, Original Signed By William D. Reckley, Project Manager Project Directorate IV-2 Division of Reactor Projects III/IV/V Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation cc:
