June 10, 1993 Docket Nos. 50-269, 50-270 and 50-287 Mr. J. W. Hampton Vice President, Oconee Site Duke Power Company P. O. Box 1439 Seneca, South Carolina 29679
Dear Mr. Hampton:
SUBJECT:
REVISED RESPONSE TO NRC BULLETIN 88-04, SAFETY-RELATED PUMP LOSS
.p (TACS NOS. M85334/M85335/M85336)
^
In a letter dated October 14, 1992, we requested a corrected response to NRC Bulletin 83-04, due to apparent errors in the original responn related to operation of the Low Pressure Service Water (LPSW) pumps.
By letter dated January 7, 1993, you provided a revised response as requested.
In your letter, you described your actions in evaluating the effect on the LPSW pumps if operated in a deadheaded condition.
In this evaluation, it was determined that such operation could result in accelerated wear of pump internals, but would not lead to immediate failure of the pump.
You stated that procedural guidance had been developed to ensure that the LPSW pumps would not be exposed to extended operation in deadheaded conditions.
The NRC staff has reviewed your revised response and has determined that the use of plant operating procedures to prevent deadheading the LPSW pumps represents an acceptable resolution of this issue for the LPSW pumps. This completes our action under TACs M85334, M85335, and M85336.
If you have questions regarding this matter, contact me at (301) 504-1495.
Sincerely,
/s/
