Emergency Diesel Generator Preface UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION HUMAN RESOURCES TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR Purpose This book is intended for use as a student reference manual during nuclear power station standby Emergency Diesel Generator hands-on course presentations to United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) management, engineering, and inspection personnel. Effective presentation requires knowledgeable instructors utilizing facilities equipped with diesel generators and component parts which are the same as or directly relatable to those used at all the nuclear power stations within the jurisdiction of the NRC.

Content This book describes and enumerates the legal basis and requirements for Emergency Diesel Generators (EDG) at commercial nuclear power stations under the jurisdiction of the NRC.

Its coverage of the EDG ranges all the way from the basic theory of diesel engines through the selection, design, construction, qualification, operation, surveillance testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of diesel generators. It also covers the requirements for documentation of licensee commitments for the EDG units in their UFSAR, FSAR, Technical Specifications, programs, and procedures.

Limitations This book is not intended for use in the day-to-day operations and maintenance of diesel generators. It tends to be generic and may lack the details required to perform specific operations. Licensee and vendor manuals should be referred to for each specific diesel generator at each plant site.

Illustrations and examples of manufacturer and licensee designs, construction, applications, commitments, programs, and procedures should be treated as generic. Each plant is unique in these areas. As a consequence, a thorough examination of each licensee's commitment documentation for each plant is required.
