May 23, 1990 Docket No. 50-219

-Mr. E. E.-Fitzpatrick Vice President'and Director Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station lo Post Office Box 388 Forked River, New Jersey 08731 j:

Dear Mr. Fitzpatrick:

1

SUBJECT:

POTENTIAL HAZARDS OR CHANGES IN POTENTIAL HAZARDS DUE TO TRANSPORTATION IN THE VICINITY OF THE OYSTER CREEK NUCLEAR GENERATING' STATION From our discussion with GPUN and the State of New Jersey related to the issuance of an'0yster Creek Full Term Operating License, and from a review of existing documentation, the NRC staff has concluded that there is sufficient truck traffic in the vicinity of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station (OCNGS) specifically on U.S. Route 9, to warrant an assessment of the frequency of hazardous material shipments and, potentially, the level of risk associated with the shipments.

We therefore require that within one year you provide us with information

' including a more detailed characterization of traffic and hazardous materials shipments in the vicinity of OCNGS, that would pemit verification that the risk due to nearby transportation is acceptability low.

We request'you respond within 30 days of receipt of this letter indicating your intent to comply with this requirement and submit the details of your intended act'on for staff review.

i Sincerely, signed by J. Stolz, for i
