2.0 DISCUSSION 3.1 The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issues standards for protection against radiation. These standards give several definitions of radiation zones or areas depending on the type and level of radiation and the degree of access to the area (s).

Each nuclear facility must prepare its own definitions, within the limitation of the NRC standards, to fit the design and geographical factors peculiar to the facility, of.

3.2 Appropriate efforts shall-be made to reduce personnel exposure to plant originated radiation to the lowest reasonably achievable values.

Radiation surveillance shall be conducted on a routine basis at frequencies sufficient to identify and evaluate current radiation hazards throughout the station.

3.3 Topics covered in this procedure include:

llTATIONS AND ACTIONS 6.1 tt the radiation levels in an area change enough to cause the atea to move from one classification to another, the area shall be redesignated to reflect the current conditions and applicable controls shall be instituted.

7.0 MATERIALS OR TEST EQUIPMENT N/A 8.0 PROCEDURE The following radiation area designations with their appropriate postings shall be used at the station:

8.1 Unrestricted Area 8.1.1

- An area where access is not controlled for purposes of protection of individuals from exposures to radiation or radioactive materials shall be designated an Unrestricted Area. All areas outside the l

Turbine, Reactor and Radwast? Buildings are normally classified SP61.010.03 Rev. D 10/28/76 Page 2 L-.

" Unrestricted Areas".

8.1.2 Radiation levels in an Unrestricted Area are such that, if an individual were continuously present in the area, could not result' in his receiving a dose in excess of:

8.1.2.1 2 urem in any one hour 1

8.1.2.2 100 mrem in any seven consecutive days 8.1.2.3 500 mrem (whole body) in any one calendar year (based on 5

~

designated as a Restricted Area. An area outside of these building may be temporarily established as a Restricted Area.

The temporary-area shall be properly posted and located inside of an area to i;

which access can be controlled.

8.3 Radiation Area 8.3.1 An area inside a Restricted Area shall be designated a Radiation Area if an individual could receive a whole body dose in excess of:

8.3.1.1 5 mrem in any one hour 1

8.3.1.2 100 mrem in any five consecutive days 8.3.2 Each Radiation Area shall be conspicuously posted with a sign or i

signs bearing the radiation ' caution symbol. and the words:

8.3.2.1 Radiation levels in these areas and the date surveyed may i

be included on the sign (s).

8.3.3 Radiation Areas should be entered only when necessary to perform a specific job.

When entered, time spent in the area should be kept to a minimum.

8.4 High Radiation Area 8.4.1 An area inside a Restricted Area shall be designated a High Radiation Area if an individual could receive a whole body dose in excess of:

av' 8.4.1.1 100 mrem in any one hour.

8.4.2 Each High Radiation Area shall be conspicuously posted with a sign or signs bearing the radiation caution symbol and the words:

DANGER HIGil RADIATION AREA 8.4.3 Entrances to high radiation areas shall be maintained locked er. cept during periods when access to the area is required, with positive control over each individual entry. These controls shall be established in such a way that no individual will be prevented from leaving a high radiation area.

8.4.4 Entries to high radi*ation areas shall be made in accordance with Re ference 11.3.

Personnel going into a high radiation area shall notify the control room before entering and af ter exiting the area.

These entries shall be logged in and out.

8.4.5 Direct survuillance aa-/ Le substi:utal for the controls given in 8.4.3 and 8.4.4 for a temporary high radiation. area established for a period of 30 days or less.

8.5 Radioactive Material Area 8.5.1 Area Designations 8.5.1.1 An area or room in which licensed material is used or stored and which contains any radioactive material (other than natural uranium or thorium) in an amount exceeding 10 times the quantity of such material specified in Appendix C of Reference 11.2 shall be designated a Radioactive Material Area.

8.5.1.2 An area or room in which natual uranium or thorium is used or stcred in an amount exceeding one hundred times the quantity specified in Appendix C of Reference 11.2 shall be designated a Radioactive }bterial Area.

8.5.1.3 Each area or room specified in Sections 8.5.1.1 and 8.5.1.2 shall be conspicuously posted with a sign or signs bearing the radiation caution symbol and the words:

8.5.2.1 A room or area is not required to be posted with a caution sign because of the presence of a sealed source provided the radiation level twelve inches from the surface of the source container or housing does not exceed 5 mrem /hr.

8.5.2.2 caution signs are not required to be posted at an area or room containing radioactive materials for periods less than eight hours provided that:

.1 The materials are constantly attended during such periods by an individual who shall take precautions necessary to prevent the exposure of any individual to radiation or radioactive materials in excess of the limits establir,hr.!
