SUMMARY
10 CFR 71 - APPEtJDIX A & B 1.
EACH OF THE FOLLOWItJG TESTS WERE APPLIED TO THE MODEL 50 SOURCE CHANGER If4 THE SEQUEf4CE AS LISTED.
10 CFR 71.36 R1 STATES THAT THE RADIATIOfJ IfJCREASE AT THREE FEET FROM THE PACKAGE SURFACE MAY f40T EXCEED 1000 MR/HR. COMPLIANCE TO THIS g
SPECIFICATIOf4 WAS DONE BY MERSURING THE DISTANCE FROM THE 5
OUTLET PORT TO THE CAPSULE TIP OF THE DUMMY SOURCE PIGTAIL ASSEMBLY WHICH WAS LOCKED If4 SIDE THE PACKAGE DURIf4G THE TESTS THE DEVICE WAS DESIGNED FOR R RADI ATIOfJ " SAFE ZOfJE" OF + 1/4 ItJCH TO - 1/4 ItJCH, AS MEASURED ABOVE.
AS LOtJG AS THE DUMMY PIGTRIL CAPSULE DID NOT SHIFT BEYOtJD THESE LIMITS, IT WAS ASSUMED THAT THE RADI ATIOfJ WOULD f40T HAVE INCREASED BEYOND THESE LIMITS, IT WAS REASOfMBLE TO ASSUME THAT THE g
RADI ATIOfJ WOULD fJOT HAVE INCREASED BEYOND THE 200 MR/HR g
MAXIMUM SURFACE RADIATIOtJ (OR APPROXIMATELY 0.5 MR/HR AT 3 FEET).
ACTUAL TESTS WITH 120 CURIES OF IR-192 VERIFIED THIS ASSUMPTIOtJ.

THE IfJTERtJAL POLYURETHAtJE FORM WHICH FILLS THE VOID BETWEEf4 THE SHIELD CASTING AND THE STRINLESS STEEL HOUSItJG IS THE OtJLY ITEM OF THE PACKAGE WHICH IS tJOfJ-METALIC.
THE FORM WAS SUBJECTED TO O. 5 STAtJDARD ATMOSPHERE WITHOUT ANY SIGNS OF DISINTEGRATIOtJ.
THE HOUSING WOULD NOT COLLAPSE WITH A SUDDEtt LOSS OF RTMOSPHERIC PRESSURE (AS ItJ AN AIRPLANE) BECAUSE THERE ARE OPEtJIfJGS IN THE HOUSItJG TO ALLOW PRESSURE EQUALI-ZATION OfJ ALL SURFACES.
EtJGItJEERItJG DATA IS PROVIDED WHICH VERIFIES THAT THERE WILL BE NO COLLAPSING PROBLEM VIBRATIOtJ THE PACKAGE HAS BEEN SUBJECTED TO BOTH THE fJORMAL CONDITIOtJS OF TRANSPORT AtJD THE RUGGED FIELD USE FOR A SUFFICIEtJT PERIOD OF TIME (4-1-77 TO THE PRESENT) TO VERIFY ANY POTEtJTI AL FOR DAMAGE. THE PACKAGE SHOWS TJO DAMAGItJG EFFECTS.
WATER SPRAY THE Uf4IT WAS SPRAY WETTED FOR 1/2 HOUR WITH NO DAMAGING EFFECT.
FREE DROP NOTE: THE FOLLOWIfJG TESTS WERE PERFORMED WITH THE CHAtJGER IN THE OVERPACK 1-1<'2 TO 2-1/2 HOURS AFTER THE WATER SPRRY TEST, THE PACKAGE WAS FREE DROPPED FROM A FOUR-FOOT HEIGHT OfJTO A 1/4-INCH THICK STEEL PLATE ON A CONCRETE FLOOR.
IN AN EFFORT TO CAUSE MAXIMUM DAMAGE, THE PACKAGE WAS DROPPED SO THAT THE LOCK, WHICH SECURES THE SOURCE PIGTAIL ASSEMBLY, WOULD BE AFFECTED I
I?J SUCH MANNER AS TO PERMIT THE SOURCE TO BE SHIFTED OUT OF THE " SAFE" ARER OF THE SHIELD <SEE DMG 50-3).
DROP #1-THE PACKAGE WAS DROPPED THROUGH THE CENTER OF GRAVITY Of4TO THE LOCKItJG RING CLOSURE (SEE DWG 200-1, PHOTO #3)
RESULT -- f 40 DAMAGE TO OVERPACK OR CHAtJGER DROP #2-THE PACKAGE WAS DROPPED It1 AN ItJVERTED ATTITUDE TO CAUSE THE GREATEST POTEiJTI AL DAMAGE TO THE CHANGER.

DROP 1 & 2 THE BAR WAS DROFPED ONTO THE DRUM IN AN AREA CLOSEST TO THE CHANGER OUTLET EfJD AND THE LOCK END.
RESULT -- 3</16 IfJCH DEEP SPHERICAL DdNT IN THE SURFACE.
THERE WAS f40 DAMAGE TO THE CHANGER.

OTHER COMPRESSIVE FORCES WHICH WERE PREVIOUSLY g
APPLIED TO THE CHANGER ARE SHOWN ON DWG 100-2.
B l
THE LORDS WERE APPLIED FOR A SHORT TIME ONLY AS THE ALL I
METAL HOUSING NOULD NOT FATIGUE UNDER A 24-HOUR DURATION.
I RFTER EACH TEST THE PACKAGE WAS IN ACCEPTABLE CONDITION FOR HAND CARRYING OR SHIPMENT, AS WOULD BE DONE FOR RETURN OF THE g
PACKAGE TO THE MANUFACTURER. THERE WAS NO DANGER OF THE LOCK g
RELEASING ITS HOLD ON THE SOURCE PIGTAIL ASSEMBLY, OR MOVE-l MENT OF THE SOURCE BEYOND THE " SAFE ZOf4E" OF THE CHANGER.
I HAC 10 CFR 71 - APPEfJDIX B HYPOTHETICAL ACCIDEf1T COfJDITIOfJS f 40TE : THE FOLLOWIf4G TESTS WERE PERFORMED WITH THE CHAf4GER IfJ THE OVERPACK THESE TESTS WERE COfJDUCTED IfJ SEQUEf4TIAL ORDER AS REQUIRED 1-FREE DROP (20 FT. )
l THE PACKAGE (MODEL 50 CHAfJGER IN OVERPACK) WAS DROPPED FROM A 30- FOOT HEIGHT Of4TO A 1/4 INCH THICK STEEL PLATE i
WHICH WAS LYIfJG OfJ A COfJCRETE FLOOR J
THE PACKAGE WAS SUSPENDED SO THE CENTER OF GRAVITY <FOR MAXIMUM IMPACT) WOULD BE IN LINE WITH THE LOCK SO THAT THE IMPACT WOULD CAUSE MAXIMUM DAMAGE BY EITHER TEARING THE LOCK OFF OR BEfJDIf1G ITS ANCHOR POIf4T TO THE HOUSING SO AS TO CAUSE THE LOCK TO PULL THE SOURCE PIGTAIL ASSEMBLY FROM ITS SAFE ZOf4E. THIS WOULD CAUSE AN If1 CREASE IN THE LEVELS I
OF RADIATIOfJ AT THE PACKAGE SURFACE.
RESULTS -- SEE DWG 50-2 1-THE PIGTRIL ASSEMBLY WAS UN-DAMAGED 2-THERE WAS NO CHANGE IfJ SOURCE PIGTAIL POSITIOf4 2-THE DRUM <OVERPACK) SUFFERED A NOMINAL DEFORMATIOfJ OF THE COVER. THE CLOSURE WAS UfJ-AFFECTED 4-THERE WAS NO I?JDICATION OF DAMAGE TO THE CHAf4GER.
THE MODEL 50 SOURCE CHANGER WITHSTOOh THE DROP TEST EXCEPTIONALLY. THE SURFACE RADIATION LEVELS DID NOT CHAfJGE, FOR THE SOURCE CAPSULE REMAINED IfJ THE " SAFE ZOf4E" OF THE CHAf 4GER. SIDE AfJD END IMPACTS SPREAD THE CORCE OVER l
THE PROJECTED ARER OF THE SHIELD CASTING WHICH IS SUPPORT-ED BY A STIFF POLYURETHANE FORM, TWO WELDED BRACKETS AND THE HOUSING. THE LOCK ASSEMBLY <NORMALLY THE AREA MOST SUSCEPTIBLE TO CRITICAL DAMAGE) WAS UfJAFFECTED.
PUfJCTURE 2-PUf4CTURE THE PACKAGE WAS DROPPED A TOTAL OF FIVE TIMES FROM A 40-IfJCH HEIGHT ONTO A STEEL CAR OF 6-INCH DIAMETER, 9-IfJCHES LONG, WITH A 1/4 RADIUS AT THE COfJTACT END.
THE BAR I
I WAS PLACED ON A 1/4-IfJCH PLATE Of4 A COf4 CRETE FLOOR.
THE PACKAGE WAS DROPPED FROM A HORIZOf 4TAL POSITIOfJ, Of4 ITS SIDE, TO EXPOSE THE UNIT TO DIRECT SIDE IMPACT FOR MAXI-MUM POTEf1TIAL DAMAGE.
RESULTS -- SEE DWG 50-3 1-SIDE IMPACT CAUSED NOMINAL COSMETIC DAMAGE OfJLY 2-CORf4ER IMPACT CAUSED PJOMIfJAL COSMETIC DAMAGE Of4LY 3-fJO FAILURE OF SOURCE POSITIOf4 OR SHIELD If 4TEGRITY THE SOURCE CHAf4GER WITHSTOOD THE PUfJCTURE TEST EXCEPTIOfJ-g ALLY WELL.
THE MOST CRITICAL DROPS, IMPACTIfJG Of4 THE ARER g
CLOSEST TO THE LOCK BODY, GAVE MRXIMUM STRESS TO THE ASSEMBLY. THESE TESTS DID f40T ALTER THE IfJTEGRITY OF THE OVERPACK OR THE SOURCE CHANGER.
3-THERMAL THIS TEST WAS PEPFORMED OfJ THE CHANGER, WHILE OUT OF THE OVERPACK, IfJ ORDER TO VERIFY THAT THE SAFETY <SHIELDIfJG)
OF THE MOST CRITICALLY SUSCEPTIBLE COMPOfJENT IS ACCEPT-ABLE.
THE CHAfJGER WAS EXPOSED TO 1,475 DEGREES F.
FOR 20 MIfJUTES AND ALLOWED TO COOL IN STILL RIR.
RESULTS THE CHANGER PACKAGE WITHSTOOD THE THERMAL TEST QUITE WELL, AS THERE WERE NO BURNED THROUGH AREAS OF THE HOUSIfJG WHICH COULD HAVE RESULTED WITHOUT THE COPPER INTERFACE BETWEEN THE STAIf4LESS STEEL HOUSIf1G AND THE DEPLETED URANIUM CAST-If4G.
THE COPPER PREVENTS A EUTECTIC MELT FROM OCCURIfJG, AfJD IS PERMRf4ENTLY SECURED IfJ POSITION BY THE FORM WITHIfJ THE HOUSING.
THE DUMMY SOURCE PIGTAIL ASSEMBLY WAS STILL IfJ THE PROPER POSITIOfJ AND SECURELY HELD BY THE LOCK.
THE DUMMY SOURCE PIGTAIL, WHICH HAS BEEN PREVIOtISLY CLASSIFIED AS "SPECIAL FORM" AND HAS BEEF 4 SUBJECTED TO THE TESTS OF 10 CFR 71-APPENDIX D, WAS IfJ ACCEPTABLE COf4DITIOfJ THE STEEL f4AMEPLRlE, WHICH WAS ETCHED WITH 002 -
005 IfJCH DEEP LETTERS, WAS EASY TO READ RFTER THE THERMAL TEST.
THE PLATE REMAIfJED SECURELY RTTACHED TO THE PACKAGE.
THE SHIPPIf4G SAFETY PLUG WAS UfJ-AFFECTED.
ITS IfJTEGRITY PROVIDES PHYSICAL ASSURAf4CE THAT THE SOURCE CAPSULE DOES REMAIN AT THE CENTER OF THE SHIELD CASTIfJG " SAFE" AREA.
