SAFETY ANALYSIS REPORT 1.0 GENERAL INFORMATION f
1.1 Introduction 1.1.1 I.N.C. Model IR-50, with OP-100 overpack, is designed j
for use as a source changer, storage container and Type B shipping container for radiographic sources in_Special Form.
The capacity of the container is 240 curies of Iridium 192.
The container will accept I.N.C. sources listed in Section 1.3.
These sources have satisfied the requirements for Special Form radioactive material and have been issued IAEA Certificate of Competent Authority Number USA /0297/S.
A copy of'this certifi-cate is included in Section 1.3.
1.1.2 The Model IR-50 has~been previously approved as a Type B shipping container and has been issued USNRC Certi-ficate of Compliance Number USA /9156/B and IAEA Certi-ficate of Competent Authority. Number USA /9156/B(U).
A i
copy of each of these certificates is contained in

Section 1.3.
1.2 Package Descriution i
r 1.2.1-Packaging 1.2.1.1 The I.N.C. Model IR-50 source changer measures 8 7/8 inches (226mm) lon 1/2-inches (216mm)g, 4 1/2 inches (114mm) wide and 8 high.
Th6 gross weight of the con-tainer is 45 pounds (20.4 kg).
A copy of Dwg. No. 2A
{
is contained in Section 1.3.
1.2.1.2 The radioactive source assembly is housed in a zircal-i loy or titanium "S" tube.
The "S" tube has an outside I
diameter of 0.5 inches and.a wall thickness'of 18 ga.,
as shown in Dwg. No. 2A (Section 1.3).
1~2.1.3 The radioactive source assembly-is installed in the shipping container such that the radioactive source 4
capsule is in'the " maximum shield" position.
The source is held in position by means - of the : lock as--
sembly.
The lock assembly secures the source assembly by. " entrapment" of the stopball in such a manner that

O SAFETY ANALYSIS REPORT prevents " pass through" of the source assembly and a forked indicator plate which prevents removal of the source assembly.
The forked indicator plate is ac-tuated by rotation of the lock, which has a pin which engages and operates the indicator plate.
When the assembly is unlocked, the indicator plate is exposed and permits insertion or withdrawal _of the source as-sembly.
The lock assembly is mounted on each end plate of the changer by 1/4-20 socket head stainless bolts.
This section has prior review and acceptance Certifi-cate of Compliance No. USA /9156/B(U) enclosed in Sec-tion 1.3.
1.2.1.4 The "S" tube is surrounded by 32 ' pounds (14.5 kg. ) of depleted uranium metal as shielding-material.
The uranium metal is cast around the "S"
- tube, 1.2.1.5 The depleted uranium shield assembly is encased in a stainless steel housing.
The housing is fabricated from 1/3 inch (3.2mm) thick stainless steel with 1/8
({}
' inch (3.2mm) thick, internal supports.
The entire housing is heliarc welded.
All contact points between the depleted uranium metal and the stainless steel are protected with copper plates.
1.2.1.6 A square steel plate 1/4 inch (5.25 mm) thick is welded to each end on the inside of the housing and is drilled and tapped 1/4-20 to; receive the lock assembly bolts.
1.2.1.7 The void space between the depleted uranium shield asssembly-and the housing is filled with a rigid poly-urethane foam (Metrefoam LDR-20 or equivalent).
1.2.2
-Operational Features 1.2.2.1 The source assembly is~ secured in the storage position by the lock assembly.
Rotation of the key rotates the lock assembly and moves the forked -indicator plate to a position which engages the source assembly at the stop_ ball.
The indicator' plate recedes into a cavity,:

SAFETY ANALYSIS REPORT jects above the lock assembly, indicating that the forked indicator has released the source assembly.
A cap plug is threaded into the lock assembly as an added protection against source assembly removal.
The cap plug is drilled for use of a wire seal for connec-tion to the lock assembly to prevent accidental remov-al and as an indicator to discourage tampering.
The container is identical at both ends to permit loading of either or both ends with source assemblies.
When only one source assembly is loaded in the container, a shipping plug is threaded in the opposing end of the container and the plug is safety wired to the lock body as an added safeguard.
This section has prior review and acceptance Certificate of Compliance USA /9156/B(V) enclosed in Section 1.3.

1.0 DESCRIPTION
1.1 Two dummy sources loaded in Model IR-50 source changer, S/N 0299.
Two dummy sources loaded in Model IR-50 changer S/N 2004.
1.2 Two changers, S/N 0299 and 2004, loaded in Modei OP-200 overpack.
2.0 CONDITIONS 2.1 Drum with contents inverted and suspended 30 feet above 1/2 inch thick steel plate target.
2.1.1 Drum released for free fall and impacted center of tar-get.
Bounced once and came to rest on its side.
Orien-tation of contents to impact point arranged so as to cause maximum possible damage.
Ol' '/
3.0 RESULTS 3.1 Impact point was oblique against closure ring at the desired orientation.
3.2 Closure ring, drum cover and drum were deformed in a crushing manner.
Maximum depression of the drum was 1 1/4 inch wide by 16 inch long (circumferential1y).
The cover was deformed at the impact point 1 1/4 inch, matching the deformation of the drum.
There is a nomi-nal deformation in the cover where one of the wooden insert sections in the drum contacted the cover.
3.3 The closure ring was virtually unaffected, with only a slight warp crea ted.
3.4 The drum, cover and closure ring remained completely assembled, with no separation.
The only wooden insert sections damaged were:
one crushed partially and one cracked.
All other wood sections remained in near-perfect condition, wy TITLE REY.
