The IR-50 source changer is approximately 8.87 inches long,4.5 inches wide, and 8.5 i

p inches high. The radioactive material contents consist of iridium-192 in source p

assemblies that meet the requirements for special form material. The source assemblies i

p are positioned within a zircalloy or titanium "S" tube within the IR-50. The "S" tube is p

surrounded by a shield assembly made of depleted uranium. The uranium shield y

assembly is encased in a stainless steel housing. The space between the uranium shield p

assembly and the stainless steel casing is filled with a rigid polyurethane foam. The p

maximum weight of the IR 50 source changer is 53 pounds and the maximum gross j

UNITED STATES l J',g j

NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 2006H001 e

o APPROVAL RECORD Model No. IR 50 Package Certificate of Compliance No. 9156 Revision No. 5 By application dated December 29,1997, as supplemented on March 3, September 10, September 30, October 26, and November 12,1998, Industrial Nuclear Company (INC) requested that Certificate of Compliance No. 9156 for the Model No. IR-50 package be terminated. Transport of special form sources within the IR-50 source changer is now authorized by Certificate of Compliance No. 9185, Revision No. 4, for the Model No. OP-100 package.

Certificate of Compliance No. 9156 for the Model No. IR 50 package has been extended until July 31,1999, to allow time for users to change the nameplate and markings on existing packagings to be cor.sirvt with the new Certificate of Compliance for the Model No. OP-100 package.

The drawings for the Model No. OP-100 package and the Model No. IR 50 source changer have been revised to clearly identify the materials of construction of the package and to provide appropriate tolerances for a!! dimensions.

A condition has been added to the Certificate of Compliance that clarifies that the Model No. IR-50 source changer shall be shipped within a Model No. OP-100 overpack.

The staff agrees with the applicant's conclusion that these changes do not affect the ability of the package to meet the requirements of 10 CFR Part 71.
