i INTRODUCTION In compliance with reporting requirements detailed in Yankee Atomic Electric Company Technical Specification Section 1 6. 6. 7. 11', this report sumuarizes the results of the offsite environmental radiation surveillance program for the period Jur.e 29, 1975 - December 31, 1975.
Included with this report are the tallowing:
1.
Table I - A summary of analyses for the period June 29, 1975 through December 31, 1975 - including for each media sampled i
during the reporting period:
a.
Number of sampling locations b.
Total number of samples c.
The high, low and the average of all real values for the Zone I stations d.
The high, low and average of all real values of the Zone 11 stations e.
The high, low and the average of all real values for the station with the highest average value f.
The number of nonroutine reported u.easurements g.
The ratio (F) of the number of positive values to the total number of values (both positive and "Less Than") is given for each average.
2.
Table II - IX - Locations of sample points and monitoring stations.
3.
Table X - Detect ion capabili ties for Er.vironmental Radiological Sample
\\nalysis See Note to Table II for axplanation of Zone I, Zone II All analyses during the reporting period, except the TLD neasurements cade by plant personnci, were performed by Teledyne Isotopes, Inc.,
Westwood, h'ew Jersey.
During the period of this report, levels of plant related radioactive materials above background as determined by the environmental monitoring program do not indicate the likelihood of anu public intakes or exposures in excess of 1 percent of those that cor'
.c. ult from continuous exposure to the concentration values l'sted in Appendix B. Table II, Part 20 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
In addition, no statistically significant variation of offsite environmental concentrations with time were observed.
_-ee-+
'TLD re dings mada at nins pointo on the plant rsstricted area fence (points 13 - 21 in Table IX) indicate elevated exposure rates due to direct radiation from stored wastes and miscellaneous sources onsite.
However, due to Yankee's isolated location, there is no likely significant increase in exposure to any member of the general public.
All points exhibiting an increase were located no more than 0.2 kilometers from the center of the containment. All other TLD sites, including two at 0.8 kilometers and 0.5 kilometers from the containment building showed no significant increase in exposure over the six month period. TLD readings are routinely made by Yankee Rowe personnel on-monthly integrated neasurements at twenty-two locations.

Gross Alpha Discussion Theairparticulate.grossalphasummaryinTableIindicgtesthat 3tation A-2 showed signiYicantly, higher activity (2.5E-3 pCi/m') during this semi-annual period than!was noted'in the background Station A-5.
This is based on 6 positive alpha *inalyses for A-2 out of 26 sampics versus 9 positive sarples for station A-5 of 26 sampics. A summary of air-borne gross alpha activity by quarter is shown below along with the total particulate gross alpha activity, released each quarter.

3 pCi/m in the third quarter and 1.4 E-3 pCi/m in the fourth gaarter. This compares to background station measurements of 2.0 E-3 and 1.1 E-3 pCi/m3 for the third and fourth quarters respectively. Since total gross alpha releases for the fourth quarterwere 4.8 times higher than the third quarter and gross alpha activity was significantly higher at all statiens during the third quarter it is concluded that any variations;in individual station averages are unrelated to the trivial amount of particulate gross alpha' activity released during this semi-annual period.

i Cs-137 Discuss 3on Page 9 of table 1 shows an average value of 5.3 pCi/gm of Cs-137 for Station SV7. Assuming all of the Cs-137 is within the first 5 cm of soil and assuming 100 percent occupancy, the corresponding concentration to yield a dose of 5 mrem per year is 1.7 pCi/gm. The incremental dose rate above Lackground at Station'SV" after 'djusting for 70 percent occupancy would be 7.62 mRom/ycar. Ilowever, ful cher examination of ' release, data for the period from July to September 1975 indicate that releases of Cs-134 were of the same order of magnitude as Cs-137. Also, fourth quarter releases of Cs-134 were an order of magnitude higher than Cs-137 release. There fore,
it would be expected that if the detected Cs-137 at Station SV7 was plant related Cs-134 would also have been detected. Table I indicates that no Cs-134 was detected at any sofi sample stations.
It seems likely t. hat the reported values for Cs-137 are due to contamination and are not the result of plant releases.
Further sampling will be done to confirm this and soil sampling procedures will be examined to avoid any possibility of contaminating seil samples.
Co-60 Discussion As stated in the Yankee Atomic 0 rsite Environmental Monitoring Report for January 1, 1975 - June 30, 1975 additional soil samples were taken to check for the presence of plant related isotopes at soil sample station SV2 (Dunbar Brook).
No ~ Co-60 was detected in any of these additional soil samples indicating the likelihood of cross contamination of sampics in handling. As stated in the Cs-137 discussion the soil sampling proceduie3 will be examined to avoid any possibility of contaminating soil samples.

o REPORTING METHOD FOR OFFSITF ENVIRONMENTAL RADIOLOGICAL MONITORING I.
What is Reported:
The follgging is reported for each particular measurement (gross beta, Sr, etc.) and each isotope of a gamma spectrum:
1.
The high, low and the average of all real values for the Zone 1 stations 2.
The high, low and the average of all real values of the Zone II stations 3.
The high, low and the average of all real values fcr the station with the highest average value 4.
The number of nonroutine reported measurements II.
How the Numbers are Generated:
1.
A number is reported as positive provided that its value is greater than the 3 o counting error 2.
When the real value for a particular analysis is lower than the detection limit, the value is reported as less than ("L.T.")
the particular detection limit For a specific sample site, medium and analysis, several values will be averaged depeneing on the sarple frequency.
For the case where all the salues are positive, the average is based on all the values.
The standard deviation of the average is calculated by taking the square root of the sum of the squares of the individual deviatians and dividing by the number of values.
Where there are mixed positive and "Less Than" values, only the positive values are used in the average. The standard deviation is also based only on the positive values.
The ratio of the nueber of positive values to the total number of values (both positive and "Less Than") ic given for each average.
Where no "L.T." values have been reported for a spc:ific analysis on a particular media, the appropriate nominal detection sensitivity as supplied by tha laboratory will be usci as the LLD value.
Where there are "L.T." values reported for a specific analysis on a particular media, the high, low and average of the reported "L.T." values is given as the LLD.
- A nonroutine analysis is one in which the reported value exceeds ten tines the control sta' ion value.

NOTE:. Zone I (indicator) locations are those locations considered within the possible influence of routine plant releases. Zone 11 (control) locations are considered outside the influence of plant operations.
Monitoring of control and indicator stations allows comparisons of activity in sample media while minimizing the problem of changes in natural or fallout exposure rates or levels of activity from causes not related to station operation.
