.s CAROLINA POWER & LIGHT COMPANY SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT 1985 900,000 KW - UNITS 1 & 2 ASTM A325 NUTS USED ON ASTM A490 BOLTS, ITEM 90 BOLTED CONNECTIONS WITH EXCESSIVE GAPS AND ASTM A325 NUTS ON ASTM A490 BOLTS, ITEM 92
Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
On June 18, 1982, Mr. C. Hehl of the NRC was notified of a potentially reportable item per provisions of 10CFR50.55(e), and on July 2, Mr. A. Hardin was notified of two additional examples of the same probic,, also evaluated as potentially reportable. These problems consisted of conta ctions between structural steel members in the Unit No. 1 turbine building, which were found to have gaps between the mating surfaces, and/or ASTM A490 bolts with A325 nuts.
As stated in our interim report (NRC-14 dated 10/13/82), a test procedure was designed by Ebasco Services, Inc. to dete;. dne the acceptabil '.y of the bolt-nut combination.
The tests have been completed and the results indicate there is no significant loss in load capacity of the connections due to the A325 not a being used. The bolts are acceptable "as-is" (PW-AS-2229) and, as a result, this item is non-reportable.
The other problems called in under this item deal with gaps between the mating surfaces of structural members. This condition has subsequently been identified in j
additional connections, and Deficiency Reports (DR) written for each case. All I
connections with this condition evaluated to date have been non-reportable; however, each connection will have to be evaluated individually.

g Mr. James P. O'Reilly NRC-26 We are continuing our structural steel reinspection so that all connections with structural nonconformances can be identified. -We expect the reinspection and evaluation to be complete by April 15, 1983. We will keep you informed of our progress and evaluations on this item until completed.
Yours very truly, M
