Extension of Mark I Program Completion Date Cooper Nuclear Station NRC Docket No. 50-298, DPR-46

Reference:

1) Letter from D. B. Vassallo to J. M. Pilant dated September 15, 1982, " Revision to Order for Modification of License"

2) Letter from J. M. Pilant to J. T. Collins dated April 13, 1983, " Mark I Modification Welds Performed by Unqualified Welders"

Dear Mr. Vassallo:

Reference 1 revised the Cooper Nuclear Station Facility Operating License to include the following condition:

"Any plant modifications needed to assure that the facility conforms to the acceptance criteria contained in Appendix A of NUREG-0661 shall be designed and its installation shall be completed prior to the start of Cycle 9 at the completion of your 1983 refueling outage."

The 1983 refueling outage is presently scheduled to commence May 1, 1983, and conclude May 28, 1983.

Reference 2 (copy attached) recently informed the Staff of certain unacceptable welds needed to complete the Mark I Containment Program that were expected to be repaired by the end of the May, 1983, outage. Since these velds and certain additional welds performed in 1982 as part of the Mark I program implementation are still under evaluation and the extent of the corrective measures required is undefined at this time and may not be completed by 6
