Description of the Deficiency l

Ground water was found to be leaking into the pits which house the suction i

barrels of the three residual heat renoval pumps, one high pressure core spray punp, ana one low pressure core spray pump.

The pit housing the high pressure i

core spray pump suction barrel is located in the reactor building and is 4 feet in diameter and 28 feet 6 inches deep. The other four pits are located 1

in the auxiliary bays and are 4 feet in diameter and 15 feet 7 inches deep.

The leakage was found at elevation.163 feet 10 inches as shown on Figure 1 and j

at elevation 158 feet 11 inches as shown on Figure 2.

The leakage is believed j

to be the result of the absence of water stops at elevation 164 feet 7 inches i

(see Figures 1 and 2 attached).

Although considered renote, there is a possibility that all pump suction pits could be flooded sinultaneously.

This could lead to the flooding of the pump compartnents, thus rendering all energency core cooling systens inoperable.

Since the building sump punp systens and outside dewatering systens are i

Quality Assurance Category II, no credit has been taken for these systens to i

prevent the flooding of the pump compartments.

Corrective Action j

The corrective action is still being investigated. The final report, including the corrective action to be taken and an analysis of the safety implications, will be subnitted by January 20, 1982.
