Subject:

CONTAINMENT SPRAY INITIATED BY FAILURE OF POWER SUPPLY At about 8:30 a.m., 9/25/81, with the reactor at cold shutdown, failure of a power supply caused initiation of the "A" train of the Containment Sprsy Systete. This caused discharge of borated water from the Refueling Water Storage Tank into the reactor building for about ten seconds, at which time the spray was manually terminated by a Control Room Operator.

The total quantity of water discharged into the cont 6i.nment is estimated to be about 100 gallons.

j' Eightworkerswereinsidecontainmentatthetimeo[theevent,however,therewasto apparent injury to personnel or damage to equipment. Minor contamination of personnel has been detectad and it is planned to perform wh 1e body counts of the affected 9

individuals.

The licensee and the Resident Inspector are con inuing to investigate the cause of this event.

Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to issue a news release.

Region V (San Francisco) received notification of this occurrence from the Resident Inspector at 9:30 a.m. on 9/25/81. Th;s information is current as of 9:55 a.m. on 9/25/81.
