Description of Event

4 On August 13, 1981, uith Unit 2 in Mode 1, the steam turbine driven auxiliary feedpump failed to' function properly during a monthly periodic surveillance test and was subsequently removed from service. This event

{

is contrary to T.S. 3.7.1.2,'and reportable pursuant to T.S. 6.9.1.9.b.

Probable Consequences of Occurrence Since two 50% capacity electric driven auxiliary feedpumps were available to supply feedwater to steam generators if required, the public health and safety were not affected.

Cause of Event

The cause of this event was a failed speed control governor on the steam turbine driven auxiliary feedpump. After verifying the speed c ntrol governor was properly adjusted, the feedpump was started for a monthly surveillance test. The pump discharge pressure pegged high and I

the pump discharge relief valve lifted. The governor speed setting was adjusted downwards by the operator but with no effect, and the pump was subsequently removed from service for repairs of the governor.

Inmediate Corrective Action The affected pump was removed from service. The defective governor was removed and replaced with a spare.

i Scheduled Corrective Action The defective governor has been sent to the manufacturer for repair.

After its repair, it will~be maintained as a spare.

Actions Taken to Prevent Recurrence No further action is required.

Generic Implications Similar failures as described above have not occurred in the past; therefore, there are no generic implications to this event.
