June 17, 1981 lientification of Occurrence:

The meteorological instrumentation tower was struck by lightning. This created an event contrary to Technical Specification 3.3.3.4.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

Mode 3 hot shutdown (0%)

D2scription of Occurrence:

At 1536 during hot shutdown operation, a lightning strike rendered all meteorological instrumentation inoperable.

Maintenance was initiated and operability was restored at

~

1730 to all instrumentation except the 175' windspeed in-dicator.

Full operability was restored at 1130 on June 24, 1982 Designation of Apparent Cause:

The cause of this event is attributed to lightning striking the meteorological monitoring tower.

This rendered all in-strumentation inoperable.

Analysis of Occurrence:

There wa. ao effect upon the health or safety of the general public.

Corrective Action

All affected instrumentation was repaired or replaced and the functional test was satisfactory.

An engineering investiga-tion will be conducted to evaluate the installed lightning eliminator system.

a This was the first lightning induced loss of all meteorologi-cal instrumentation and this is the thirteenth event reported under this Specification.
