By letters dated March 19 and May 18, 1981, you requested exemptions to 10 CFR 50, Appendix R for the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Units Nos. 1 and 2.

The specific exemption requests are:

e Section III.G.2 - Fire Barriers e Section III.G.3 - Alternative Shutdown We have found agreement with your and other licensee's argument that Section III.E requirements for hydrostatic hose tests exceed the NFPA 196 require-ments. Changes to Section III.E are presently being made so no exemption will be required for this item.

In our review of your RCP lube oil collection system, we find the system installed at both units meets the Section 111.0 requirements. Therefore, no exemption is necessary for this requirement.

In regard to the use of water curtains for certain openings in fire barriers (addressed in March 19, 1981 submittal), we find that your request provides a sound technical basis warranting further staff review. The schedule requirements for this item are, therefore, suspended in accordance with 10 CFR 50.48(c)(6) until final Comission action on this request.

Your request for exemption from the provisions of 10 CFR 50.48(c)(5) regarding the submittal of your plans and schedules for complying with 10 CFR 50, Appendix R. Item III.G.3, on alternative shutdown capability, is under review and will be the subject of separate correspondence.
