Subject:

Performance Appraisal Inspection - Pilgrim NucleaFl56we\\ ' Station s

r The purpose of this letter is to confim plans by the NRC Performance Appraisal Branch (PAB) to conduct an inspection at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station site and at the Boston Edison Company Corporate offices.

The inspection is scheduled for the weeks of July 20, 27, and August 10, 1981.

It is anticipated that the inspection team will spend the first week, July 20, 1981, at the plant site, the second week, July 27, 1981, at the corporate offices, and the third week, August 10, 1981, at either location as required to complete the inspection.

A meeting to present the Performance Appraisal findings is scheduled for August 14, 1981.

Enclosure A to this letter describes the general inspection plan that will be used during the Performance Appraisal and a listing of Functional Areas that will be inspected.

The rvfomance Appraisal will be conducted by a team of six senior NRC inspectors, headed by Mr. Oberg as Team Leader.

Performance Appraisal Team members are identified in Enclosure B.

A request for access authorization to the plant site, along with required identification infoma-tion, will be sent to you by separate correspondence.

Certain information to support the Performance Appraisal inspection has been received from your staff.

Your assistance in providing this information is appreciated.

I trust that the pre-inspection meeting held between Mr. Oberg and members of your staff on June 23, 1981 was beneficial to you in explain-ing the Perfomance Appraisal inspection format. An Interview List, which provides a schedule for interviews with certain members of your staff during the inspection, will be foryarded to you by the PAB prior to July 10, 1981.

The PAB inspections are an integral part of the NRC's Revised Inspection Pro-gram as described in NUREG 0397 and approved by the Commission in June 1977.
