Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
On May 13, 1981, the NRC (Mr. R. Butcher) was notified by Carolina Power
& Light Company (Messrs. L. E. Jones and K. V. Hate') of an item considered
! potentially reportable per the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) and-10C7R21.
The NRC was informed that during preheat verification by a QA Inspector I
a linear indication was visually detected in a clip. This linear indi-l cation extends the entire length of the clip (13 inches) and is caused by Itainations within the steel material. The clip is located in the Unit 1 containment building at the 283' elevation and is made of ASTM A36 material which forms the connection between an embedded plate and platform steel, On June 2, 1981, the NRC (Mr. R. 3utcher) was again informed by Carolina Power & 1ight Company (Mr. N. J. Chiangi) that a simmr problem was detected in another clip of the same material type and that the evaluatica for reportability of the two items would be cc nbined.
The intent of this letter is to inform you that Carolina Power & Light Company has not been able to complete its evaluation concerning this matter since (1) the Architect Engineer's evaluation on the connections and (ii) the inspections of addstional clips made fro:2 the same material heat numbers has not been completed. It is now anticipated that the reportability evaluation will be completed by July 13, 1981, at which time the NRC will be informed of the results.
