Dear Mr. Groce:

The Commission has issued the enclosed Amendment i'o.5 7 to Facility Operating License No. OPR-36 for the Maine Yankee Atomic Pcwer Station in response to your telephone request of May 22, 1981, as confirmed by your telecopy application dated May 22, 1981. The amendment was issued orally by telephone on May 22, 1981, and was effective on that date.
The amendment modifies Technical Specification 3.17.B.7.6 to allow oper-ation of the reactor building purge system to by-pass the charcoal absorbers during the Cycle 6 refueling operation only under the following conditicas:
(1) during the time the Low Pressure Safety Infection (LPSI) System check valves are being installed or completion of refueling operations, whichever is earlier; and (2) during the charcoal absorber by-pass mode the contain-ment purge valves will be trippable manually and automatically.
Copies of the Safety Evaluation and the Noticc of Issuance are also enclosed.
