I as writin6 to request that an Environmental Impact Statement for a class 9 accident be issued for the McGuire Nuclear Plant, prior to obtaining it's operating license, which will be reviewed at the licensing hearing next month.
I as aware that a statement was issued for McGuire in April of 1976 but this does not account fo: a class 9 accident, which ir a real possibility at McGuire.
A supplement Environmental Impact Statement, published November 1980, was issued for the Virgil C. Summer Plant wnich was up for licensing a few months ago. Local government officials were even asked to comment.
I don't understand why a supplement Environmental Impact Statement has not been issued for McGuire. One is very much in order since McGuire is Duke Power's first test case for thin shell containment. 'Ihe plant is so close to a densely po,oulated area that includes Charlotte, which involves over a millic people.
Duke's own estimata of peak pressure is in excess of the strength of the reactor containment!
Duke is pressing for licensing without correcting this weak containment problem. It seems tHat their real concern is for ths 51200,000 in profits they're tot making each day McGuire does not operate.
