M I N N E S OTA 5 5 401 March 31, 1981 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U S Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant Docket No. 50-282 License No. DPR-42 50-306 DPR-60 Delay in Implementation of NUREG-0737 Post TMI Requirement Our letter of January 30, 1981 included reference to Action Plan Item III.A.2 covering emergency preparedness. This reference pointed out that a revised Emergency Plan includes a description of the meteorological system intended to meet the first phase requirements of Appendix 2 to NUREG-0654, R*ev 1.
'Ihe revised Emergency Plan document was submitted to you with our letter'of February 6, 1981.
The description of the backup meteorological system (page 82) indicates the addition of a variance computer to develop a standard deviation of wind direction for stability class data.
It further indicated that it was planned that this equipment item would be in service by April 1,1981.
The variance computer hardware has been on order for several months but recent followup with the vendor indicates that delivery has been delayed and the equipment will not be available for the planned April 1 in-service date.
Taking into account installation time and checkout following installa-tion we are now projecting that the system will be in service by May 1, 1981.
The above information was outlined in a March 30, 1981 telephone conversa-tion with Mr. Jesse Pagliaro of the IE Region III Of fice.
