DPR-42 50-306 DPR-60 January 1,1981 Lessons Learned On September 13, 1979, Mr D Eisenhut of your staff directed all operating reactor licensees to comply with the schedules included for implementation of TMI Lessons Learned modifications. By letter dated December 31, 1979, and previous correspondence referenced in that letter, Northern States Power Company described implementation methods for complying with the January 1,1980 and January 1,1981 Lessons Learned schedular items. In view of the long lead time required for installation of equipment (e.g.

buildings, piping, shielding and computer) and wishing to fully comply with the previously established January 1, 1981 deadline, it is necessary to make commitments for equipment at an early date. Although mos t of the January 1, 1981 items call for implementation review by the NRC, there are several modifications that are costly and which would be adversely af fected, both cost wise and schedule-wise, if revisions become necessary at a later date.

We request prompt review by the NRC of NSP's proposed implementation plans for the following items so that timely decisions may be made to pro-cure equipment to meet the schedule deadlines:

Item 2.1.6.b - Plant Shielding Review Item 2.1.9 - Reactor Vessel Head Vent Item 2.2.2.b - Onsite Technical Support Center Reference should be made to our December 31, 1979 and March 13, 1980 sub-mittals [L 0 Mayer, (NSP) to Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRC)]

for details on each of these items.
