Gentlemen:

Haddam Neck Plant Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit Hos. 1 and 2 Masonry Wall Desien In Reference (1), the NRC Staff requested that Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company (CYAFCO) and Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) provide infomation concerning the design and construction of concrete =asonry valls at the Haddas Neck Plc.t and Millstone Unit Nos.1 and 2.

In Reference (2) for the Haddam Neck Plant and References (3) and (h) for Millstone Unit Nos.1 and 2, respectively, CYAPC0 and NNECO provided the NRC Staff with a program and a schedule for the completion of the reevaluations of the concrete casonry valls and any resultant modifications to these valls.

Subsequent to the docketing of References (2), (3), and (k), CYAPC0 and IEiECO have determined that additional time vill be required to complete the modifications to the =asonry valls at the Haddam Neck Plant and Millstone Unit No. 1.

Additional tine vill also te required to ecmplete the reevaluations and any resultant construction vork for the nasonry valls at Millstone Unit No. 2.

~2-The current status of the reevaluation and construction efforts for all three units is provided below as well as revised schedules for the an-ticipated completion of. the efforts requiz ed to fully respond to the Reference (1) concerns.

Haddam Neck Plan 1 The required reevaluations of the concrete masonry valls at the Haddam Neck Plant, performed in accordance with Reference (2), have been completed.

The resulting modifications are currently forty percent (h0f.) complete.

i CYAPCO anticipates completion of the construction program by June 1, 1981.

A' final report will be docketed at.that time.

Millstone Unit No. 1 The required reevaluations of the concrete =asonry walls at Millstone Unit No. 1,.perfor=ed in accordance with Reference (3), have been completed. The resulting construction effort is currently fifty percent (50%) complete.

Subsequent -to the docketing

  • Reference (3), additional concrete masonry construction work was identified as a result of the efforts to respond t:

I&E Bulletin No.79-01B, Environmental Qualification of Electrical Equipment.

In addition, the availability of local craft personnel has been severely

' limited, which has precluded *nloading the construction effort to ecmplete the work within the original schedule provided in Reference (3).

The remaining construction vr is limited to accessible concrete masonry.

Millstone Unit No. 2 The reevaluation program for the concrete masonry walls at Millstone Unit No. 2, described in Reference (k), is currently sixty five percent (65%) complete.

To date, no modifications'have been identified for those valls which have been--

The engineering efforts required to respond to the Reference (1) concerns cfor Millstone Unit No. 2 are core intricate 'and time consuming due to.the -

numerous FSAR loading conditions which must be evaluated.

NNECO anticipates that:the reevaluations and any construction.vork required-for the cecessible. concrete =asonry walls will-be co=pleted by October 1, 1981. The reevaluations and any associated construction efforts for the e

inaccessible concrete masonry valls at Millstone Unit No. 2 to expected to be completed prior to startup frcm the next refueling.

A final report is scheduled to be docketed following completion of the work req-dred by Reference (1).
