NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION 3
.,I wAsHWGTON, D. C. 20665
- ,a February 20, 1981 Docket No. 50-285 Mr. W. C. Jones Division Manager, Production Operations Omaha Public Power District 1623 Harney Street Omaha, Nebraska 68102
Dear Mr. Jones:
The staff has recently completed the review of Fort Calhoun Station's automatic initiation of the auxiliary feedwater system (AFW) and its implications to positive reactivity feedback resulting from a steam line break accident. Based on our review of your submittals, we find the proposed method and supporting analysis for automatic initiation of auxiliary feed-water to be acceptable.
The results of the staff's review are contained in the attached Safety Evaluation Report (SER) which supplements the SER transmitted to you by letter dated February 2, 1981. Additional supplements to the staff's Feb^ruary 2, 1981 SER will be provided upon completion of our review. Areas which are still under review include the Instrumentation and Control electrical review for both control and safety grade instruments and controls, the consequence of a main steam line break with continuous main feedwater addition (as described in IE Bulletin 80-04), the consequence of a main steam line break concurrent with a station blackout, the evaluation of the containment response resulting from a main steam line break and the review of the information requested in Enclosure 2 of the staff's October 22, 1979 letter regarding Auxiliary Feedwater flow design.
If you have any questions on this subject, please contact your NRC Project Manager.
Sincerely, 6
de
