SUBJECT:

APPLICATION FOR AMENDMENT NO. 9 TO THE MODEL NO. MAGNASTOR STORAGE CASK - ACCEPTANCE LETTER

Dear Mr. Fowler:

By letter dated October 9, 2019 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML19296C938), NAC International (NAC) submitted an application for Amendment No. 9 to the Model No. MAGNASTOR storage cask. The application proposes add a new concrete overpack, four new heat load zone patterns, a new hybrid fuel assembly type, and reorganized technical specifications. Staff performed an acceptance review of your application to determine whether the application contains sufficient technical information in scope and depth to allow the staff to complete a detailed technical review.

This letter informs you that the application appears to contain the necessary information to begin our technical review. We have established a schedule for the technical review of your amendment request. The schedule allows for the staff to issue a possible request for additional information by the end of March 2020, and a draft certificate of compliance and safety evaluation report for rulemaking by the end of August 2020, based on you responding to a request for additional information by May 1, 2020. If no additional information is needed, the draft certificate of compliance and safety evaluation report may be issued by May 1, 2020. The staff estimates that completing the safety review of this application will require approximately 700 staff hours.

Please reference Docket No. 72-1031 and Enterprise Project Identifier (EPID) No.

L-2019-LLA-0220 in future correspondence related to this request.

Sincerely,

/RA/
