General Electric Test Reactor, Gb o,
N License No. TR-1, Docket No. 50-70 SC
Dear Mr. Cady:
Your letter dated April 10, 1981 inquired as to whether a problem, which you identified as having been discovered during an inspection at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant in Alabama on June 28th, might apply to the GETR.
You also referred to it as a potentially serious problem which may exist with General Electric Company reactors in that there may be possible breaks in one of their cooling 9.' g systems.
I have brought this matter to the attention of. J 8[ ' /

1.
The problem in question involved a postulated

scram discharge volume line break in Boiling 4

Water Reactor nuclear power plants manufactured c3 by GE.
This problem was postulated by
/w a
Mr. Carlyle Michelson of the NRC.
2.
GE's Boiling Water Rtactor (BWR) system employs a hydraulic principle as the primary mechanism for achieving scram (prompt reactor shutdown).
The problem raised by Mr. Michelson relates to the hydraulic systems for achieving scram in BWR's, and not the reactor coolant system.
3.
The GETR scram system is an electromechanical system, which fundamentally differs from the Boiling Water Reactor system in terms of prin-ciples of operation and design.
The problem postulated by Mr. Michelson would not apply to the GETR.
