Reportable Occurrence No. 50-219/80-54/3L Report Late Decerber 23, 1980 Occurrence Date Noverber 30, 1980 l

Identification of Occurrence Operation in a degraded mode pennitted by a Jimiting condition for operation per

%chnical Specifications, section 3.4.A.3, when Core Spray Systan I was retovtd fran service to inspect Core Spray Pumps NZ01A and NZ01C. The pumps had been sprayed with water when the control Rod Drive (CRD) punp seal / bearing water i

pipes developed leaks.

t This event is considered to be a reportable occurrence as defined in the Technical Specifications, paragraph 6.9.2.b. (2).

Conditions Prior to occurrence m e plant was operating at steady state power. Bhjor plant parameters at the time of occurrence were:

Power:

Core 1210 FWt Electrical 360 bWe

+

4 Flow:

Recirculation 11.2 x 10 gpn Feedwater 3.75 x 106 lb/hr j

Description of Occurrence l i l

On Noveuber 30, 1980 leaks were discovered to have developed in the seal water piping of both CRD purrps. As a result water was sprayed over the Core Spray l}i Pumps below. As a precautionary measure, punps NZ01A and NZ0lc were renoved fran service for inspection after performing an operability check on the redundant systen. Initial megger readings taken (prior to stopping the water spray cxxupletely) revealed resistance readings of approximately 20-40 Megohms which indicates that the pumps would have started if necessary.

After the water spray had been stcpped the pumps were inspected. -S e inspection indicated that water had collected in the motor lead connection box on the punp motors. The water had apparently leaked into the junction box through worn cover gaskets and also possibly through the conduit carrying the cables to the l

junction box. The conduit was found to be open where the cable enters fran the cable trays.

Reportable Occurrence Page 2 Report No. 50-219/80-54/3L Apparent Cause of Occurrence The cause of the occurrence was attributed to water spray frun the CRD seal piping leak wetting the notor power leads. Water had entered the connection box through worn cover gaskets and possibly through open ended conduit.

J Analysis of occurrence i

'Ihe Core Spray Systen is an emergency standby systen designed to provide continued cooling of the reactor core during loss of coolant accidents. There are two independent redundant loops, each capable of performing the design function.

The safety significance of the event is considered mininni since the redundant loop was verified to be operable before reroving Systen I from service.

i

Corrective Action

The notor leads were dried out and megger rmMngs taken afterwards indicated resistance valves of 2,000 and 2,500 Megohms for pumps NZ01A and NZ01C, respectively.

1

'Ihe junction box cover was replaced using new gaskets and tle conduit was sealed at the open end. Core Spray Systen I was returned to service after performing an operability test on the Core Spray Pumps.
