Gentlemen:

This refers to the inspection conducted by Messrs. Erb and Oller of this office on September 7, 1972, of construction shutdown maintenance activities at the Midland site and to che discussion of our findings at the conclusion of the inspection with Messrs.

C. Q. Hil,ls and B. H. Peck of your staff. Areas examined during the inspection included site activity logbooks, drainage of site structures, fire protection, and storage protection relative to Class I structures, systems, and components. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective examination of procedures and representative records, and observations by the inspectors.

With regard to questions raised during this inspection, we under-stand that you intend 'o: (1) winterize the Class I concrete t

foundations at the site, /.2) assure that the heat tracing system for the fire protection system is operable, (3) assure that Class I material is stored so that ground contact will be avoided, and (4) rewrap Cadweld connectors, using an improved wrapping material, wherever the present. wrapping has deteriorated. We will examine your action on these matters during our next routine inspection.-

During this inspection, the inspectors indicated a need for (1) an updated quality assurance manual, (2) a listing of Class I compo-nents and equipment for the P!dland Unit 1 and Unit 2 facilities, t

and (3) a copy of the latest Bechtel reports dealing with corrosion of materials stored outdoors. We request that you forward this material at your earliest convenience.

Since our use of this material is only to facilitate our inspection efforts, it will not be placed in the Public Document Room and will be returned to you t

when it has served its purpose.
