Docket Nos. 50-325 and 50-324 Mr. J. A. Jones Senior Executive Vice President Carolina Power & Light Cogany 336 Fayetteville Street Raleigh, North Carolina 27602
Dear Mr. Jones:
The staff has cogleted its review of the following two issues:
(1) a crack in the 2A RHR pump suction line, and (2) UT inspections on the recirculation inlet nozzle safe ends for Brunswick Units 1 and 2.
The results of our review are:
(1) Licensee Event Report 2-76-161 reported the discovery of a crack in the 2A RHR pump suction line during a routine inspection. At our request, you performed an additional inspection of the RHR suction lines.
Our consultant, Franklin Research Center, has concluded that the crack was an isolated case and not an inherent design defect and we agree with their conclusion.
Franklin has also reconnended a routine visual inspection of these lines in the future. We consider your routine inservice inspection program adequate to address this concern.
(2) Carolina Power & Light Company performed UT inspections on the recirculation inlet nozzle safe ends at Brunswick Units 1 and 2 in 1978 and again in 1979. These inspections were performed as a result of the cracking found at the Duane Arnold Plant. The inspection reports were reviewed by our contractor, Franklin Research Center. We agree with Franklin's conclusion that no significant change in the UT results had occurred.
We also con-cur with Franklin's reconnendation-that CP&L should develop an inspection program to continue monitoring the safe ends.
We find the inspection program presented in your April 17, 1979 submittal to be acceptable.
Copies of our evaluations containing the contractor's reports are enclosed.
Sincerely, g
Thomas K. Ippolito, Chief
