SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT BRUNSWICK UNITS 1 & 2 RECIRCULATION INLET N0ZZLE SAFE END INSPECTION PROGRAM ENGINEERING BRANCH DIVISION OF OPERATING REACTORS

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Carolina Power and Light Company performed UT inspections, in September 1978, on the recirculati6n inlet nozzle safe ends at Brunswick Units 1 and 2.

T ese inspections were perfomed as a result of the cracks found at the Duane Arnold Plant which had a similar recirculation inlet nozzle safe end design. Additional UT examinations on both units were performed in 1979 to determine if any change had occurred since the 1978 inspections.

The results of these inspections were reviewed to determine if any change had occurred in the interval between the inspections.

2.0 EVALUATION _

The enclosed Technical Evaluation Report was prepared by the Contractor, Franklin Research Center, as part of NRC contract No. NRC-03-79-il8.

3.0 CONCLUSION

After the review of the Contractor's Technical Evaluation Report, we agree with their findings that no significant change in the ultrasonic response was detected in the 1979 inspections and that if flaws were present, no significant growth had occurred.

Therefore, we conclude the Brunswick Units 1 & 2 recirculation inlet nozzle safe ends are acceptable for continued operation.

However, the Licensee should. implement an inspection program to continue monitoring the safe ends.
