Dear Mr. Howard:

Our September 19, 1975, letter to you described two alternatives for upgrading fire stops in cable penetrations through fire barriers at Arkansas Nuclear One-Unit 1 to accorraodate combustible material that was installed under a non-documented design change.

Following studies of the two alternatives, the decision was reached to implement the first alternative which involves removal of all combustible materials from cable penetrations through fire barriers and insertion of non-combustible materials. 'The materials to be used in replacing the combustibic silicon i

sealant are Marinite-36, Kaowool mixed with Flamemastic 71A, Flamemastic 71A and asbestos cloth strips ir. various configurations and combinations as deemed necessary for specific applications. Should cracking occur in any of the fire stops the cracks will be filled with Flamemastic and the entire fire stop will be sprayed with 2 layers of Flamemastic (each layer 1/8 inch thick).

We have already started this program in the control room and cable spreading room and will proceed from there to other areas of the plant where cables penetrate fire barriers.

Very truly yours, nu
