September 1989 Limerick Generating Station i Unit 1 September 1 through September 30, 1989 I. Narrative Summary of Operating Experiences ,
Limerick Unit 1 began the month of September in OPCON 1 at a nominal 100% of rated thermal power. On September 10, 6 actor pow 7r was reduced to 55% to support a control rod <
pattern adjustment. Reactor power.was restored to 100% on i September 11. On September 14, reactor power was reduced to 75% to support another control rod pattern adjustment. Due to thermal limit restraints, the control roc pattern adjustment was not nade and power was restored to 100%. On Septembec 15, reactor power was again reduced. Power was reduced to 58% and a control rod pattern adjustment was made.
Reactor power was restored to 100% on September 17. On September 29, reactor power was reduced to 81% for a control rod pattern adjustment. Reactor power was restored to 100%
on September 30. Limerick Unit 1 ended the month of ,
September in OPCON 1 at a nominsi 100% of rated thermal i power.
Operational events that occurred during the month of September included:
On September 19, following the monthly operability run on the D13 diesel generator, eleven inches of water was ,
t i found in the D13 diesel generator fuel oil storage tank.
l The water was subsequently removed from the storage tank and the fuel oil lines were flushed. On September 22 l following removal of the water, an attempt was made to L operate the diesel ger.erator; however, the diesel failed l to start due to air in the fuel lines. The fuel lines were vented and the D13 diesel was subsequently started
- l. and loaded successfully; however, the response time was l slow. On September 25, after more air was vented from l the fuel oil system, the surveillance test was again L performed and completed satisfactorily. The D13 diesel l generator was subsequently declared operable.

September 1989 :
Limerick Generating Station Unit 2 !
September 1 through September 30, 1989 !
I.. Narrative Summary of Operating Experiences Limerick Unit 2 began the month of September in OPCON 1 at ,
14% of rated thermal power. On September 1, the Unit 2
. generator was synchronized to the grid for the first time and loaded to 90 MWe. On September 18, the loss of offsite power .
test was performed with reactor power at a nominal 24% of rated thermal power. The reactor scrammed on reactor low level as expected. Reactor level was res' ced using RCIC.
All diesel generators started and loaded successfully. !
~
Following restoration of offsite power, the Unit was placed I in cold shutdown. '
Unit 2 was placed in startup and achieved criticality on September 20. On September 25, the Unit was shutdown from outside the' Control Room for a remote shutdown panel test.
The shutdown was performed while the unit was operating at a-nominal 22% power. The unit was subsequently placed in cold shutdown for a scheduled mini outage. Limerick Unit 2 ended the month of September in OPCON 4 with a reactor coolant temperature of 138 F.
Operational events that occurred during the month of September included-On September 11, while at 29% reactor power, the Unit 2 main turbine tripped as a result of a generator stator cooling trip signal. The turbine bypass valves opened to control reactor pressure. Because of the limited capacity of the bypass valves, reactor power was reduced -
to 24% by inserting control rods to insure reactor pressure control.
II. Challenges to Main Steam Safety Relief Valves There were no chtllenges to the Main Steam Safety Relief Valves during the month of September; however, relief valsas ,
were cycled manually as part of the startup test program. i I
