Date and Manner AEC Was Informed:

Mr. J. E. Smith, Superintendent, Oconee Nuclear Station, advised the

inspector of the problem by telecon on March 14, 1972.

B.

Description of Particular Event or Circumstances:

Mr. Smith advised the inspector that on March 13, 1972, a " tinkling"

sound was heard in the top of the A steam generator. At the time, the

plant was at temperature and pressure for hot functional testing.

The plant was cooled down and the steam generator opened. A piece of

pipe approximately 3/4 inch to 1 inch in diameter and 10-inch length

was located. Three other pieces of =aterial, spherical in shape, were

also found. These objects were 1-1/2 inches to 2 inches in diameter.

One was cut open and found to be hollow inside. Smith was of the

opinion that they were also pieces of pipe. A preliminary inspection

of the tube sheet revealed that the ends of the tubes had been bradded.

.

The B steam generator was then opened up and it was found that the

thermocouple harness to be used in performance testing had been torn

loose. The extent of damage in this generator has not been determined .

as yet.

Smith stated that the reactor vessel is being opened a d the internals

removed to determine if there is foreign material in the vessel and if

damage has occurred here.
