Duke Power Company Oconee, Unit Nos. I and 2 Dochet Nos. 50-269, and 50-270 Seneca, South Carolina SU3 JECT:
RF_ ACTOR TRIP DUE TO GRID FAULT At 7:55 p.m. on July IS, Unit No. 2 tripped froc 95 percent power due to a turbine trip caused by a grid fault. The grid fault resulted from a lightning strike en a switchyard in Greenville, South Carolina.
Loss of the turbine-

generatcr caused the anticipatory reactor trip circuitry to function as designed, tripping the reacter.
All systems functioned as designed.
Offsite power to the station was not lost.
During the transient, a gasket on the suction line cf one main feed water pu=p failed causing a steam leak into the turbine building basement.
As a result of the steac leak, a Unit 1 electrical panel was lost causing a temporay loss cf Unit 1 hot well pumps and condensate booster pumps.
Unit I was in a heatup, at 350 degrees Fahrenheit following auxiliary feed water modifications.
Heatup was ternisated to restore equipment operability.
Unit I startup schedule is not know at t.his time but a. significant delay is not anticipated.
Unit 2 was restarted at 2:00 a.m. on July 19 and is operating at 50 percent power
-m epairs to the main feed punp gasket are completed.
Local media interest has occurred due to the fact that the lightning strike in Greensville, South Carolina resulted in a fire at the substation and a localized power failure.
A news release is being issued by the licensee.
The NRC does not plan to issue'a news release. The State of South Carolina has been informed.
Regica II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone fron the Resident Inspector at 8:30 a.c.
on July 19.
