Mr. O. D. Parr, Chief Light Water Reactors Branch No. 3 Docket Nos. 50-338' Division of Project Management 50-339 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. Denton:

Recently, we filed Amendment 65 to the application for operating licenses for North Anna Units 1 and 2.

The primary purpose of this amend-ment was to update the FSAR to reflect modifications and design changes made to the station since Amendment 64 was prepared during the Summer of 1977.

This update was intended to make the FSAR describe, as accurately as presently possible, station features prior to the issuance of the Unit 2 operating license, expected in the Spring of 1979 One additional amendment is antici-pated for early this year to address several issues still under discussion with the Staff.

As was noted in the cover letter to the amendment, the major part of Amendment 65 was a complete revision of Chapter 6 of the FSAR, as well as its Supplement. As the Staff is aware, several modifications have been made to engineered safety features at North Anna since mid 1977, all of which have been the subject of extensive correspondence between Vepco and the NRC. Since this correspondence, as well as responses to numerous previous NRC comments in the Supplement, superseded much of the material in FSAR Chapter 6, the main text has been revised to incorporate as much of this supplemental material as practical. to this letter provides a cross reference which indicates the dis-position of each of the questions in the Supplement. Attachment 2 lists those changes made to Chapter 6 during this revision which were not directly related to the system modifications previously reviewed by the Staff. As a result af the revisions made by this amendment, Chapter 6 now describes the safeguards systems as presently designed, and presents the results of the analyses previously submitted to the Staff in support of these systems.

Changes made to other sections of the FSAR by this amendment are out-lined in Attachment 3.

It will be noted that a large portion of this information was also previously submitted to the Staff.

ATTACHMENT 2 CH4NGES IN THE TEXT NOT DUE TO EDITING OR THE INCORPORATION OF THE CO:OIENT RESPONSES CHAPTER 6 In Section 6.2.2.1, the containment high pressure set point for Phase A ESF Actuation was changed from 15 psia to 17 psia.

The HiHi pressure set point for containment spray initiation has been changed from 25 psia to 27.75 psia.

(See Vepco letter No. 565, October 13, 1978).

The Section in 6.2.2.2 on motors has been numbered 6.2.2.2.4.

The sen-tence " Stator temperature rise is 90 C, measured by resistance at 115 percent los.," has been added.

Comment 6.52 was incorporated into Section 6.2.2.3.1 of the text.

In the paragraph on thermal insulation, the number of types of insulation has been changed from 2 to 7.

The paragraph on neutron shielding has been changed to identify the neutron shielding as a dimethyl polysilaxane silicone elastomer.

The response to comment 6.129 is now Table 6.2-64.

Penetrations 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, and 86 are now listed as flooded. Penetrations 32, 100, 108, 97B, and 112 have been added.

In Section 6.2.7.2, the number of resistance temperature monitors has been changed from 21 to 20 to reflect the current design.

In Section 6.3.2.1.5 (formerly 6.3.2.1.7), the design of the heat tracing system has been changed to maintain the fluid between 155 F and 185 F at 400F 0

ambient air temperature instead of 150 F to 1800F.

In Section 6.3.3.4, the upper limtt of boron concentration in the RWST has been changed from 2,500 gpm to 2,100 Lpm to reflect technical specification limita-tions.

Figures 6.4-1, 2, and 3 (formerly S6.12-1, 2, and 3) have been modified to show the addition of electric coils, required by Regulatory Guide 1.5?, to control humidity. The location of the fan, filter, and electric coil assembly has been changed in Figures 6.4-2 and 3 to avoid possible damage during a main steam line break in the turbine building.
