Dear Mr. Denton:

Per Reference (a), Commonwealth Edison Company was requested to provide a status report on the completion of all unfinished modifications which the NRC Staff require.2 to improve the level of fire protection at Zion Station.

Attach-ment 1 to this letter provides the completion date status of the unfinished modifications listed in Table 3.1 of Reference (a).

As Attachment 1 indicates, on June 1, 1979 Lil but three modifications (3.1.3 Gas suppression Systems, 3.1.14 Fire Doors, and 3.1.18 Reactor Coolant Pump) have been com-pleted.

Alto note that two items (3.1.16 Ventilation Ducts and 3.1.19 Combustible Storage Areas) originally scheduled for completion by August 1, 1979 were completed by June 1, 1979.

The current status of the three unfinished modifications is contained in Attachment 2.

Please address any additional questions that you might have to this office.

ATTACHMENT 2 STATUS OF UNFINIStfED FIRE PROTECTION MODIFICATIONS FOR ZION STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 AS OF JUNE 1, 1979 2350 013

3 '. 3 Gas Suppression Systems An automatic Halon suppression system backed up by a manually actuated CO2 system will be provided to protect the following areas:

(1)

Inner and outer cable spreading areas (5.2).

(2)

Containment penetration cable vaults (5. 3).

Status on 6/1/79:

Unit 3:

95% complete mechanically 60% complete electrically Unit 2:

85% complete mechanically 60% complete electrically Projected completion date:

8/1/79, predicated on satisfactory completion of testing.

Cables routed through the stairwell adjacent to the cable spreading area will be enclosed in a fire barrier and protected by an automatic gas suppression system (5.2).

NOTE:

The design was changed to delete the automatic gas suppression system and add two fire doors to gain acoess to the cables for maintenance and application of manual fire fighting agent.

A fire hose station is located 5 feet from the two fire doors.

Status on 6/1/79:

Fire wall is complete.

Awaiting delivery of the fire doors.

Projected completion date:

8/1/79.

Predicated on door delivery rgy date of 7/2/79.

An automatic gas suppression system will be installed to protect the diesel-driven containment spray pumps.

A curb will be provided to limit the spread of an oil spill fire in this area (5.13).

Status on 6/1/79:

The curb installation is complete.

Mechanical system 95% complete Electrical system 90% complete Projected completion date:

8/1/79, predicated on satisfactory completion of testing.

Automatic fire suppression systems will be installed in the areas of the remote shutdown panels, auxiliary feed pumps, and component cooling water pumps (5.12, 5.13).

NOTE:

The remote shutdown panel suppression system has been deleted based on fire protection vendor recommendations.

SNED is working on alternate protection by covering the pans and building a fire stop in the pan.

The other areas will have a local application CO2 system.

Status on 6/1/79:

8/1/79, predicated on satisfactory completion of testing.

3.1.14 Fire Doors The doors to the battery rooms will be replaced with 1 1/2 hour fire rated doors (5.4).

Status on 6/1/79:

Awaiting doors.

Estimated delivery date 7/2/79.

Pro 3ected completion date:

O/1/79, predicated on door delivery date of 7/2/79.

The door to the fifth battery room will be replaced with a three-hour fire rated door (5.5).

Status on 6/1/79:

Awaiting doors.

Estimated delivery date 7/2/79.

Projected completion date:

8/1/79, predicated on door delivery date of 7/2/79.

A three-hour fire rated door will be provided to isolate the combustible storage area at elevation 506 feet (5.13).

Status on 6/1/79:

Installation of the large roll up fire door has been completed.

The personnel doors have not been received.

Estimated delivery date 7/2/79.

The door to the reciprocating charging pump room will be replaced with a fire rated door and a curb will be provided at the doorway (5.12).

_ Reactor Coolant Pump An oil collection system will be provided to limit the effects of a fire involving the reactor coolant pump lube oil systems (5.15).

Status on 6/1/79:

Unit 2 complete, 3 of 4 pumps on Unit 1 complete, 0% drain piping on Unit 1.

Projected completion date:

All pumps and piping complete prior to Unit 1 Cycle 5 startup.
