Inspection 50-334/79-20
This refers to the inspection conducted by Mr. D. Beckman of this office on
September 10-14, 1979, at the Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit 1, Shippingport,
Pennsylvania, and your corporate offices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, of
activities authorized by NRC License No. DPR-66 and to the discussions of
our findings held by fir. Beckman with fir. Werling and others of your staff
at the conclusion of the inspection. This also refers to the meeting held
at the Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit 1 on Septemoer 12,1979, and
attended by Messrs. Beckman, Keimig, Mc0 scar and Cohen of the t!RC and by
Mr. G. Moore and others of your staff.
Areas examined during this inspection are described in the Office of
Inspection and Enforcement Inspection Report which is enclosed with this
letter. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective examinations
of procedures and representative records, interviews with personnel, and
observations by the inspector.
Our inspector also verified the steps you have taken to correct the items
of noncompliance brought to your attention in letters dated March 14 and
August 10, 1979. We have no further questions regarding the steps you took
to correct the item discussed in our letter of August 10. The actions
taken to correct the item discussed in our letter of March 14, 1979, is
further discussed below.
Within the scope of this inspection, no items of noncompliance were identified.
However, one of your activities appears to be in conflict with a commitment
made in your letter to NRC-Region I of April 5,1979, regarding action
taken to prevent recurrence of the item of noncompliance discussed in our
letter of March 14, 1979. With respect to this conflict, which is discussed
in the enclosed Inspection Report as a deviation, please provide a response
to this letter which includes your comments concerning this matter.

In accordance with Section 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," Part 2,
Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, a copy of this letter and the enclosed
inspection report will be placed in the NRC's Public Document Room.
If
this report contains any information that you (or your contractor) believe
to be proprietary, it is necessary that you make a written application
within 20 days to this office to withhold such information from public
disclosure. Any such application must be accompanied by an affidavit
executed by the owner cf the information, which identifies the document or
part sought to be withheld, and which contains a statement of reasons which
the items which will be considered by the Commission
addresses with specificity (b)(4) of Section 2.790.

part of the affidavit.
If we do not hear from you in this regard within
