b. The 848-8 Field Calibrator Kit will only be utilized by experienced personnel who have had prvvluus radiatica protection training. These personnel will wear appropriate monitoring devices when handling the calibrator, e.g., film badges and dosimoters. In addition the cali- ,

brator will only be utilized following issue of an sapproved Radiation Ucrk Permit.

2. The 500 millicurie Cobalt-60 source will be used to calibrate the out-of-core nuclear instrumentation. The source, which is described in Enclo-cure (!4, is made by Amersham /Searlo Corporation, and has had an Atomic Energy Commission safety evaluation indicated by the Code CKC. The 60 Co source, when not in use, will be locked in the Radioactive Source Storage Cage located in the Heat Exchanger Vault. -

The procedure for handling the 500 mci 60 Co will be as follows:

a. The source will always remain inside a lead storage container when being transported within the plant. This storage container will limit personal exposure to 2.5 millirem /hr at 1 meter from the surface of the container.
b. The Cobalt-60 source will only be utilized by experienced perscnnel who have had previous radiation protection training. These personnel uill wear appropriato monitoring devices when handling the source, e.g., film badges and dosimeters. In addition the source will oply be utilized following issue of an approved Radiation Work Permit.
c. The source will be attached to a 40 lb. test monofilm ny3cn line, or equivalent, which will be used in lowering the source from the lead source storage container to the nuclear instrumentation tube. This nylon line will be tested before use to determine its physical cen-dition. If the test indicates that the nylon line has detericrated ,

during storage, it will be replaced by a new menofilm nylon line.

In addition we wish to add the name of James G. Reed to condition 12 of the license which addresses the personnel authorised to use and supervise the use of By-Product Material. Mr. J. C. Reed has recently joined the TMI staff as a chenical supervisor. A brief resume of Mr. Reed's training and experience is given in Enclosure #5.

Due to construction and licensing delays we request the expiratien date of our By-Product Material license be extended from November 30, 1972 to
