'a J 111:E n A r:Y i: m 'A1 ion Report No.: S0-302/79-10S/03L-0 Facility: Crystal River Unit // 3 "eport Date: 21 Deconber 1979 Idtntification of Occurrence: Emorgency Diesel Canerator, 1B inoperable contrary to Technical Specification 3.8.1.1.

Condit ions Prior to Occurrence:

Mode 1 power operation (100%).

Description of Occurrence:

At 0050, it was reported that the standby cooling pump (DJP-4) on Emergency Diesel Generator 1B had failed. Remaining AC sources were vortfled operable at 0150 in complia .e with the Actton Statement re-quirements of Technical Specificat ion 3.8.1.1. In-vestigation revealed that the bearings had failed on the standby cooling ptunp. The bearings ore replaced and DJP-4 was returned to service. Emerg icy Diesel Cenc ra-tor 1B was declared operable at 0730. Following satis-factory completion of Surve t11ance Procedure SP-354 Designation of Apparent Cause:

The cause of the event is attributed to bearing failure on the standby cooling pump.

Analysis of Occurrence:

No effect upon the plant or general public. Remaining AC sources were verified operable as per the Action Stctement requirements. /.s a result of this event, diesel lobe oil ennperature decreased to 2pproxinately 70'F. According to the manufacturnr's Tech Manual, operation of the d f esel with the 1che oil torperature less than 90'F may cause damge to the main 1.ube oil pump due to higher. viscosity oil.

Corrective Action:

The standby cooling pump (DJP-3) on amergency diesel ,,en-erator LA was inspected and the bearings were replaced to prevent a similar occurrence. Modification has been written to raise the lobe oil low temperature alarm setpoint above the mintrum temperature required for safe operatton per the nanufacturer's Tech. Manual.

Fa ilure Data: This is the first occurrence of this type reparted.
