Dear Mr. May:
$UBJECT: ADDITIO!1AL REQUESTS ON RA0 WASTE VOLUME REDUCTION SYSTEM
. 4.....
Enclosed are some additional requests for information on subject s
topical report. The staff requires additional information concerning the sizing of the system, bed media attrition, expected combustion i
efficiency, iodine adsorption in the offgas system, and pH control of the scrub solution. The staff also needs the final results of the I
corrosion tests and the materials selections in order to cocplete our review.
Please' provide this infomation by June 1.1978.

From Sections 2.3.2 and 2.3.3 of the report EI/NNI-77-7 and your D
, response to Question No.1 in your January 1978 submittal, it is D
not clear what is the capacity of your RWR-1 system. State the 3
volume your system can process and prepare for shipment, in m /yr, t
3 and.<hether the system can handle 1350 m /yr for a 3800 MWt boiling water reactor plant with deep-bed condensate demineralizers (3800 MWt l
1s the maximum size reactor presently being licensed by the USNRC),
f 2.
In your response to Question No. 3, attrition of the bed media is predicted to be from 0.05 to 1.0 percent by weight per hour.
Explain hcw the bed media that is lost will be replaced.
3.
Your respense to Question No. 4 provides efficiency data for the fluidized-bed combustion process. Mcwever, data are presented only for a feed composed of polyethylene, cotton rags, cardboard, wood shavings, rubber and lubricating oi?. Provide similar data for resins, l
evaporator bottoms, and filter sludge.

4.
In your description of the offgas system provided in response to Question No.10, an iodine adsorber is specified as a packed ~ silver impregnated bed such as silica gel type AC 6120 H, or zcolite. In 1
your report EI/NNI-77-7, you shculd specify which adsorbent you propose to ',upply and the proposed bed depth of adsorbent.
