o, JUNE 18 B79 Docket No. 50-293 M r. G. Carl Andognini Boston Edison Company 800 Boylston Street Boston, Massachusetts 02199

Dear Mr. Andognini:

Your letter 79-72 dated April 9,1979 reghrding valve position indication to control room operators prompted our. conference call on Friday, May ll,1979 to discuss the need for providing environmentally qualified position indica-tion for containment isolation valves.

Your letter stated that you would replace the stem mounted limit switches on the main steam isolation valves during the next refueling outage, currently scheduled' for the first quarter of 1980.

As a result of our conversation, we understand that you will replace the position indication limit switches on the main steam isolation valves at the first unscheduled shutdown of the reactor following receipt at the plant site of environmentally qualified equipment.

Should nt unscheduled shutdown occur, your original commitment will apply.

Further, we understand that you will replace with environmentally qualified equipment those limit switches which provide containment isolation valve position indication to the control room operator the remaining power operated containment isolation valves exposed to an idverse post-accident e nvi ronment.

We also understand this action will be completed prior to startup following your next scheduled refueling outage.

We find this schedule acceptable based on the availability of redundant motor operated containment isolation valves located outside the containment which would be accessible to the operators in a post-accident condition.

We appreciate your cooperation with us.

Please contact us if this understanding is incorrect.
