SEP 171979 Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370 Mr. William 0. Parker, Jr.

Vice President, Steam Production Duke Power Company P. O. Box 2178 422 South Church Street Charlotte, North Carolina 28242

Dear Mr. Parker:

SUBJECT:

TORNADO DESIGN CLASSIFICATION (McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2)

We have evaluated the degree of conformance of the McGuire design with the Cormiission's Regulatory Requirements Review Committee Category 2 matters as set forth in Regulatory Guide 1.117, Revision 1. " Tornado Design Classification."

We conclude that your design of McGuire meets the tornado design criteria as set forth in Regulatory Guide 1.117, Revision 1, in all categories except with regard to the main steam lines (f1SL) external to the containment and/or the refueling water storage tank (RWST) or reactor makeup water storage tank (RMWST).

We consider your proposed alternate source of makeup water (spent fuel pool) in lieu of the RWST or RMWST to be unacceptable. We require that tornado missile protection be provided for either the MSL, RWST or RMWST in compliance with Regulatory Guide 1.117 Revision 1.
