SUMMARY
PRAIRIE ISLAND NUCLEAR CENERATING PLANT-UNIT I JUNE 7 to JUNE 11, 1979 1.0 Introduction This report is a summary of the examinations performed at Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant-Unit I on the feedwater system piping welds.
The examinations were performed during a weekend outage on June 9 and 10, 1979. Prairie Island-Unit I began com-marcial operation on December 16, 1973.
A visual and ultrasonic examination was performed on feedvater system piping welds from the last check valve in both systems to and including the pipe to steam generator nozzle welds, with the exception of the check valve to elbow weld on loop B that was encapsulated.
In addition, a radiographic examination was per-formed on both of the pipe to steam generator nozzle welds.
The auxiliary feedvater piping welds were also examined from the last check valve to the sweep-o-let connection weld with tts feedwater lines. The 3" auxiliary feedwater piping welds that were exam-f ined, 9 welds, are exempted from examination by ASME Section XI, and therefore are not included in Table S2.2.1.
These welds are identified in the baseline comparison table.
2.0 Discussion _of Examination Plan 2.1 Inspection Boondary, The examination plan focused on the piping circumferential butt welds on the feedwater and auxiliary feedvater systems classified as AKME Class 2.
The exrTination plan was based on the examination requirements of ths ASME Boiler and Pres-sure Vessel Code Section XI,1974 Edition through and in-cluding the Summer 1975 addenda, and complied with Prairie Island's Technical Specification, Section TS4.2.
The exami-nations were in addition to the inspection period two re-quirements of the program submitted to the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission on February 1, 1978 entitled, l
I "ASME Code Section Section XI Inservice Inspection and Test-ing Program and Information Requested for NRC Review of Requests for Relief from.iSME Code Section XI Requirements".
The components examined, examination methods, and the exami-nation report number are summarized in the tables of the attached appendices as follows:

- No examinations scheduled this Outage 2.2 Examination Procedures The ultrasonic examination procedure for pipe welds complied with the requirements of Appendix III of ASME 5 action XI that was issued in the Winter 1975 Addenda. The radiographic ex-amination procedure complied with the requirements of ASME Section III, 1974 Edition through and including the Winter 1976 Addenda. All other examination procedures compliel with i
the requirements of the 1974 Edition through and includiag the Summer 1975 Addenda of ASME Section XI.
A listing of the pro-cedures used for the examinations is shown in Table III of Appendix E.
2.3 Examination Methods Ultrasonic and radiographic examination methods and techniques were used to perform the volumetric examinations. The ultra-sonic test system consisted of an ultrasonic digital analog tester and a two channel strip chart recorder.
One channel of the recorder was calibrated to reflect ultrasonic screen height (amplitude) and the second channel was calibrated to indicate metal path (range) to the reflector. This approach to the examination gives a permanent record to the extent possible.
The radiographic examination was performed using a double well exposure, single wall viewing technique. A 50 curies IR192 source was used in conjunction with multiple 7" x 17" Kodac "M"
~ tiin.
The 4 T hole was referenced by the procedure and ASHE Section III as the essential hole.
The 2 T hole was visible in most cases, with the above technique.
A visual examination was performed on each veld and was aides when necessary with artificial lighting and verified for ade-quacy with an 18% noatral gray card with a 1/32 inch black line.
2.4 Evaluation Any indications disclosed in tho examinations were evaluated by the examiner at that time, in accordance with the rules of the procedure and ASME Section XI.
The ultrasonic examiner was aided in his evaluation by a cali-bration performed on a reference standard before each day's examination, checked before and after each individual examina-tion, and at intervals not exceeding four (4) hours.

2.5 (continued) examinations. Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company, representing ANI, provided the Authorized Inspection.
All personnel involved in the performance or evaluation of examinations are listed along with their title, organization, and ASNT Level of certificatica in Table I of Appendix E.
Certifications for examination personnel are maintained on file by Northern States Power Company.
2.6 Equipment and Materials All equipment and expendable materials used in the axemination are listed by either serial number or type along with their respectisa calibration date or batch number in Table IV of Appendix E.
The ultrasonic calibration standards used in the axamination are listed in Table II of Appendix E.
These standards are owned and mainteined by NSP.
2.7 Examination Reports and Documentation 1
All examination reports and documentation are maintained on file by Northern States Power Company. Table I of Appendix B identified the examination report number (s) for each item examined. Many of the items identify more than one report number because of the different types of examinations performed on them.
Table I of Appendix B summarized all the examinations that have been performed to data and identifies the amount that will be examined in the future to complete the ten year examination re-quirements.
For retrieval purposes, the prefix of the inspec-tion report number corresponds with the year that the inspection i
was performed. The examination reports for this outage are pre-fixed with "79-SP".
Table II of Appendix B compares the baseline results to these obtained during this examination. Table III of Appendix B identifies the isometric drawings that were used for the examina-tions.
The personnel, ultrasonic calibration blocks, procedures, equipment and materials that were used are identified in the tables of Appendix E.
Appendix F contains the Form NIS-1, entitled " Owners' Data Report for Inservice Inspections".
3.0 Summary of Results The evaluation of all the results from the inservice examinations of Prairie Island Unit I indicated that the integrity of these systems has been maintained.
There were no indications of degradations to these systems.

Absttact of F.xaminations.
Include a list of examinations and a statement concerning status of work required for corrent interval. A visual and ultrasonic examination was performed on feedwater system piping velds from the last check valve in both systems to and including the pipe to steam generator nozzle welds; with the exception of the check valve to elbow weld on loop B that was encapsulated. In addition, a radiographic examination was performed on both pipe to steam generator nozzle welds. The auxiliary feedwater piping welds were also examined from the last check valve to the sweep-o-let connection weld with the feedwater lines.
