Dear Mr. Ferguson:
Gy letter dated,July 20, 1979,,,,e requested information regarding the Surry reactor coolant pu~p supports.
You responded by letter dated Septei7l~er 14, 1979.
Our concern is the use of high s~rength maraging steel included in the_supp6rt structures.
The failure of two different types of maraging components (the steam generator swivel couplings in 1974 and the steam generator belly band bolts in 1975) prompted us to request the information you provided.
The..
information vtas_ to he1p us evaluate whether the inspection of the reactor coolant supports is warranted.
He have r2v'iei*ted the infornation provide::l in your letter and find that it does n6t sufficiently resolve our con~ern about the integrity of these components made of high strength maraging steel.' Therefore, 1*;e conclude that an inspection of the reactor coolant pump supports is necessary.
I It is requested that you perform an inspection program for the Surry Unit 1 reactor coolant pump supports during the steam generator repair effort.
This inspection should be a volumetric or a surface inspection of all mara ing components.
It is aiso requested that you provide us w"ith details oft e inspection program at least 45 days prior to inspecting the supports.
We w 11 be glad to discuss any questions you have regarding this subject.
Sincerely; A. Schwencer, Chief Operating Rcacto1~s Branch flo. 1 Di?Jsion of Qperating Reactors

Dear Mr. Ferguson:
February 28, 1980 By letter dated July 20, 1979, we requested information regarding the Surry reactor coolant pump supports.
You responded by letter dated September 14, 1979.
Our concern is the use of high strength maraging steel included in the support structures.
The failure of two different types of maraging components (the steam generator swivel couplings in 1974 and the steam generator belly band bolts in 1975) prompted us to request the information you provided.
The information was to help us evaluate whether the inspection of the reactor coolant supports is.warranted.
We have reviewed the information provided in your letter and find that it does not sufficiently resolve our concern about the integrity of these
. components made of high strength maraging steel. Therefore, we conclude that an inspection of the reactor coolant pump supports is necessary.
It is requested that you perform an inspection program for the Surry Unit l reactor cool ant pump supports during the steam generator repair effort.
This inspection should be a volumetric or a surface inspection of all maraging components. It is also requested that you provide us with details of the inspection program at least 45 days prior to inspecting the supports.
We will be glad to d-iscuss any ques~ions you have regarding this subject.
