Surry Power Station, Unit 1 Docket No. 50-280 Report No. 80-011/031-0 Event Date: 1-28-80 Title of Report: Heat Tracing System Component Failure (Strip Heater)

1. Description of Event:

During normal operations routine surveillance disclosed the failure* of the heat tracing system strip heater,Boric Acid Transfer Pump l-CH-P-2A, circuit 25A, panel 9. This event is contrary to Tech. Spec. 3.2.B.5, allowable by 3.2.D.3 and reportable by 6.6.2.b.(2).

2. Probable Consequences and Status of Redundant Systems:

The required temperature was maintained in the line since the redundant heat tracing system was operable. The health and safety of the public were not affected.

3. Cause:

Failure of the strip heater developed when water leaking from the pump flange penetrated the heat tracing system.

4. Immediate Corrective Action:

The heat tracing tape was replaced and a maintenance report submitted to repair the leaking flange.

5. Scheduled Corrective Action:

The pump flange leak will be repaired when system conditions allow.

6. Action Taken to Prevent Recurrence:

None.

7. Generic Implication:

A task force has been formed to investigate the continuing failures to the heat tracing system and to recommend solutions to the problem.
