Research Activities Jacob Philip US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (301-415-0785, jacob.philip@nrc.gov)
NEI/EPRI Concrete Workshop Washington, DC May 17, 2018
Study Objectives and Outcomes Objectives:
To provide data and analyses to support regulatory guidance update for ASR-affected NPPs through their operating life, including subsequent license renewal (SLR).
Assess significance and effects of ASR on structural performance and capability under design basis static and dynamic loads.
Identify and describe characteristics of an aging management program to adequately monitor and manage aging effects of ASR-degradation.
Outcomes:
Methodologies to determine in-situ and future structural capacity for an ASR-affected structure and inform aging management
Project Tasks Task 1: Assessing In-Situ Mechanical Properties of ASR-Affected Concrete Task 2: Assessing Development and Lap-Splice Lengths of Reinforcing Bars in ASR-Affected Concrete Task 3: Evaluating Seismic Response Characteristics of ASR-Affected Concrete Structural Members Task 4: Estimating the Degree of Reaction in ASR Affected Concrete and the Corresponding Expansion Task 5: Predicting Future and Ultimate ASR Expansion in ASR-Affected Concrete
Block Specimens
Curing Cured in molds until 7 days of age, covered with wet burlap and plastic until 90 days of age Uncovered and conditioned to 75% RH and 75°F until 180 days of age Conditioned to 95% RH and 75°F after 180 days
