e Virginia Electric and Power Company Surry Power Station, Unit No. 1 & 2 Docket No. 50-280 Report No. LER 79-009/0lT-O Event Date:

04/12/79

Description of Event

e

Attachment:

Page 1 of 1 General Electric has informed Vepco that a potential problem may exist in the Inside Recirculation Spray Pump motors.

Under certain environmental conditions, the lower bearing could overheat due to clearance tolerances allowed on the end shield, bearings, and shaft resulting in bearing size resulting in bearing failure.

This condition is reportable as per Technical Specification 6.6.2.a.(9).

Probable Consequences and Status of Redundant Systems:

In the event of the failure of the Inside Recirculation Spray Pump motors, the Outside Recirculation Spray Pumps could have provided 100% spray capability if required.

The station has periodically tested the inside recirculation spray pumps as per T.S. 4.5.A.3 and no problems have been noticed.

The health and safey of the general public were not affected.

Cause

Overheating could occur if maximum allowable design tolerances were used in fabrication.

Immediate Corrective Action

As a precautionary step, Vepco is in the process of removing the inside recirculating spray pump motors for shipment to General Electric for evaluation and correction.

Scheduled Corrective Action:

The motors will be repaired prior to unit startup.

Action Taken to Prevent Recurrence:

No other action is deemid necessary.

Generic Implic2tions:

This problen should be considered generic to all General Electric motors of this type.
