ARM/LFMB RE:
SALEM GENERATING STATION, UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 Your letter of October 17, 1989 provided a schedule for upgrading the Reactor Vessel Level Instrumentation System (RVLIS) and the Subcooling Margin Monitor (SMM).
In addition, a proposal for interim technical specifications for the RVLIS was included.
The staff has reviewed your proposed schedule for upgrading the two systems.
The schedule for upgrading the SMM on Salem Unit 2 should be moved to the upcoming refueling outage, Spring 1990.
This is a TMI Action Plan issue that has been known since 1983.
It is expected that PSE&G will make a concerted effort to fully implement this requirement as soon as possible.
The proposed schedule for upgrading the SMM on Salem Unit 1, Fall 1990, is acceptable.
For RVLIS upgrade, your proposed schedule, Fall of 1991 for Salem.2 and Spring of 1992 for Salem 1, is acceptable.
Revised Technical Specifications, to be used in the interim, along the lines of those contained in your October 17, 1989 letter, should be submitted for RVLIS for both Salem units.
