Dear Mr. Uderitz:

ACRS 10 By letter dated March 14, 1984, Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G)

Company provided a response to Generic Letter 83-28 including Item 4.3, Reactor Trip System Reliability (Automatic Actuation of the Shunt Trip Attachment for W plants).

Included was a response to plant specific questions identTfied in the NRC evaluation of the Generic Westinghouse design which was submitted by the Westinghouse Owner 1s Group (WOG) on June 14, 1983.

By letter dated June 7, 1984, the licensee provided additional information addressing the revision of breaker position status light circuitry and the temporary substitution of Struthers Dunn relays for Potter & Brumfield MOR series relays.

Enclosed is our safety evaluation report (SER) which addresses the licensee 1s response to Item 4.3 of Generic Letter 83-28.

We find that the design modifications are acceptable.

The seismic qualification of the shunt trip attachment is being conducted by the WOG.

The licensee should confirm that the shunt trip is seismically qualified when the results of the WOG qualification program are completed.

Following the implementation of the shunt trip modifications, the licensee should submit proposed technical specifications which are responsive to the staff requirements noted in the enclosed SER.

Since the submittal of proposed technical specifications is not a prerequisite for implementation of this modification, the enclosed SER completes the preimplementation review requirements of Item 4.3 of the generic letter.
