20555 Attention:
Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch, No. 1 Gentlemen:
AUTOMATIC SHUNT TRIP MODIFICATION SALEM GENERATING STATION UNITS NO. l AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 Our letter dated March 14, 1984, forwarded for your approval our plant specific design description of the subject modification.
During recent telephone discussions between Mr. T. Dunning of your staff and Messrs R. Beckwith and M.
Morroni of PSE&G, a concern was identified regarding the Bailey Control Module indication.
If 125VDC power were lost, the Bailey red light indicating breaker closed would remain lit following a plant trip via the breaker UV device.
As a result of our discussions with Mr. Dunning, we have revised the circuit design to extinguish the red light upon loss of 125 VDC power.
Attached~~are the revised prints incorporating this modification.
By this letter, as discussed with Mr. Dunning, we are also requesting approval to temporarily install a substitute relay for the Westinghouse recommended relay.
We are proposing to temporarily replace the recommended relay with a Struthers Dunn 219 frame relay.
The Westinghouse relays are not scheduled for delivery until August, 1984~ thus, installation of the automatic shunt trip feature in Unit 1 could not be completed during the present refueling outage.

Mr. Steven 6/7/84 The Struthers Dunn 219 frame relays have been seismically qualified by PSE&G and by design would be located in a benign environment.
Attached, is the manufacturers catalogue sheet and a letter certifying coil current requirements.
The Struthers Dunn relays would be replaced once the Westinghouse relays are received and plant conditions permit installation.
Please contact us if we can be of further service.

Subject:
Coil Characteristics of Type 219 Relays
Dear Mr. Morroni:
The 48VDC coil type 219 series relay has a nominal cold resi.stance of 975 ohms.
By calculation, this would mean a cold current draw of 49 milliamps.
In general, DC versions of this relay draw approximately 80 percent of the cold current when hot.
If this holds true for the 48VDC version, the hot current draw would be 39 milliamps.
Maximum continuous over voltage is 110%.
The coils will withstand 115% intermittantly without damage.
All other specifications as shown in our current general catalog would apply to 48VDC versions of this relay.
We appreciate your continued interest in Struthers-Dunn products.
If we can be of any further assistance, please let us know.
